DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking Geographic Info Systems Programmer 2.

The incumbent shall perform a variety of programming, GIS, and data analysis procedures related to airborne lidar, photogrammetry, oceanographic, GIS data, including the preparation of data plots and figures for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations; Key responsibilities and tasks of moderate scope and complexity: database management, quality control, processing and analysis of remote sensing and oceanographic datasets; writing algorithms for the processing geospatial data; field work to assist with airborne surveys; develop best practices for data collection and management; documentation and organization of field work records; project website design, development, and maintenance; Share responsibility for the computer program management, including system administration tasks of the Air-Sea Interaction Laboratory within the Marine Physical Laboratory Division (MPL); Design, write, modify, debug and implement associated application software, emphasis on MATLAB, PYTHON, and GIS applications.

The incumbent uses professional GIS concepts and applications to resolve a variety of analysis and research issues, works on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of data requires a review of a variety of factors and assists in additional analyses as needed to achieve research objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Working knowledge of GIS software, applications programming, database and table structure and design, user interface and experience design and web application development. (QGIS preferred)

  • Demonstrated project management skills. Understanding of cartographic skills to create spatially explicit map products.

  • Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.

  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Self-motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated strong commitment to customer service, attention to detail and continuous improvement.

  • Demonstrated experience working with large scientific datasets, such as satellite, and weather model output.

  • Demonstrated strong code organizational skills (eg. creating python packages, code error handling, writing python unit tests).

  • Demonstrated experience in Python proficiency.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Overtime and weekends may be required.

  • Per University of California policy PPSM 21-Appointment, this position has a background check requirement and offer of employment is contingent upon candidate clearing the background check process.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,600 - $100,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.07 - $48.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
