Overview

Utilizing 3M encoding system, the Coding Specialist is responsible for accurate assignment of I-10 and CPT codes to inpatient and outpatient medical records for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal regulations. Must meet coding quality and quantity standards. Also responsible for researching newly identified diagnoses and/or procedures for code assignments and performing related miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday (1st shift)

Work environment: Fully remote, but employee must reside within Columbus area or reasonable commute distance away from home office

Responsibilities

1. Utilizes the 3M encoder system to assign I-10 and CPT codes to inpatient medical records and calculate

DRGS.

2. Codes clinic, emergency room, and other outpatient records utilizing I-10 and CPT coding system.

3. Codes all cycle bills for Patient Accounts so that an interim bill can be generated.

4. Consistently codes 22 inpatient or 35-40 outpatient surgery/OBS records per day and 300 diagnostic

accounts per day..

5. Consistently codes at 95% accuracy rate or better (minimum quality standard).

6. Meet weekly coding deadlines to bill within NCH hospital suspense of 6 days.

7. Works successfully in a team environment to achieve coding goals and deadlines.

8. Utilizes Internet and other resources to research newly identified diagnoses and/or procedures.

9. Assists physicians in research projects by identifying the necessary ranges of disease or procedure codes.

10. Researches billing issues for Patient Accounts by analyzing edits and account denials.

11. Exhibits excellent customer service skills in daily contact with internal and external customers.

12. Identifies process problems in daily workflow and takes the initiative to solve them.

13. Uses Streamline Health, Provation, Cardio IMS, and Epic to access documentation for code assignments.

14. Reviews HIM workqueues for unbilled accts out of deadline and completes coding.

15. Performs inpatient and outpatient coding audits at direction of Coding and Compliance Manager.

16. Participates in Coding In-service programs and outside educational meetings.

17. Completes required on-line coding education modules as assigned.

18. Accesses CDI software to populate coding APRDRG and evaluate variances.

19. Query providers to confirm diagnoses, procedures or specificity.

20. Performs other duties as assigned by the Coding and compliance Manager.



Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Health Information technology program graduate with successful completion of accreditation examination preferred.

2. CPC, COC or CCS certification required if RHIT certification not completed.

3. Minimum 2-3 years of acute care coding experience preferred.

4. Working knowledge of ICD-10CM and I-10 PCS coding, CPT, and DRG'S.

5. Epic familiarity preferred.

6. Computer literacy required with ability to key entry into 3M quickly.

7. Experience with 3M encoder system preferred

8. Ability to handle multiple tasks, priorities and deadlines.

9. Analytical and organizational skills a must for analyzing charts and data.

10. Effective communication and interpersonal skills required with ability to work with physicians and other caregivers regarding coding issues.
