Job Summary

Central Washington University is recruiting an Assistant Professor - Creative Writing Fiction/Nonfiction to join our English department in Ellensburg, Washington. This role is an important member of our team as they enhance the vision for the University. The role is a campus-based position, which means you get to see the lives you are impacting. We're offering a salary, depending on education and experience, from $65,000 - $70,000 annually plus the awesome CWU benefits.

The Role:

This tenure-track position in the Department of English is expected to teach existing introductory, intermediate, and advanced creative writing courses in fiction and/or creative nonfiction, with preferred secondary expertise in poetry, screenwriting, or experimental writing, and other courses in their area of expertise using a variety of modalities. Faculty are expected to mentor students; contribute to the department/program; engage in scholarship and creative work appropriate to their field; and provide service to the University, the community, and their profession. Faculty will integrate CWU's commitment to diversity and create a learning environment that is welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA or PhD in Creative Writing
  • University-level teaching experience
  • A significant record of publication in fiction and/or creative nonfiction in nationally-recognized outlets
  • Clear engagement in collaboration to build sustainable and equitable arts communities and programs
  • Superior teaching and mentoring abilities
  • Expertise in online teaching
  • Willingness to teach a wide range of courses at all levels and modalities
  • Ability to meet or exceed tenure requirements
  • Teaching, research, service, or other experience that has prepared the candidate to contribute to CWU's commitment to the engagement and inclusion of culturally diverse students

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one book published or under contract from a nationally-recognized press
  • Additional interest and experience teaching in editing/publishing, grant writing, literature, digital humanities, cultural studies, film studies, sustainability and/or environmental writing
  • Experience or interest in coordinating speaker series for visiting writers
  • Experience or interest in teaching practicum classes for editing, design, and production of student literary journal
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in developing online and hybrid courses
  • Experience or interest in curriculum development and improvement
  • Experience or interest in program or other administrative leadership
  • Experience and demonstrated passion in providing effective and inspiring mentorship to students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience utilizing a variety of teaching methods designed to promote inclusivity and broad student access and success

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Annual Salary: $65,000 - $70,000, based on a full-time nine-month appointment
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Appointment: Full-Time, Tenure-Track, 9 Month Appointment, with 3-2-2 quarterly teaching course load. Additional Summer teaching may be available. Central Washington University is on the quarter system with appointments from mid-September through mid-June.
