45th Annual Nurse Intern Program - Summer 2025

Program Dates: May 27 - August 3, 2025

Overview: Ten-week, paid summer nursing internship. You will work alongside some of the finest nurses and healthcare professionals in the nation while participating in activities that will strengthen clinical skills, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary communication. You'll be one step ahead as you enter your final semester(s) of nursing school! Placement opportunities include medical/surgical units, inpatient specialty departments, and clinic settings. Opportunity for continued employment following the end of the summer internship along with a potential RN offer!

Qualifications: To be considered for the Nurse Intern program you must meet the following qualifications:

1. Must be qualified to graduate from a baccalaureate nursing program or associate nursing program by December 2025 or May 2026, following the summer internship.

2. Hold one of the following active certifications/licenses:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

  • Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)

  • Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P)

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license.

3. Active CPR certification: Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (with hands-on learning) from one of the following programs: American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

4. Commitment to work 30-36 hours per week for 10 weeks. Interns can expect to work all shifts, including Days, PMs, and NIghts, along with weekend and holiday rotations.

To be considered for this program, please submit the following requirements by December 15, 2024:

1. Complete the online application in its entirety, including screenshots of your CPR and CNA certifications.

2. Attach a professional resume, including high school with graduation date and anticipated future graduation date from your nursing program.

3. Attach a cover letter, which shall include thoughtful responses to the following essay questions:

  • What are your goals as an intern and post-intern?

Job Description:

This is a position for a student nurse who has completed the acute care clinical experience. The Nurse Intern provides safe, basic nursing care for patients and families, functioning under the direct supervision of the RN in the acute hospital or clinic setting with the primary goal of focusing on learning opportunities and extending the student experience. (Direct supervision means that the RN is immediately available to continually coordinate, direct and inspect, at first hand, the care provided by the Nurse Intern.) The Nurse Intern cannot independently assume duties done by an RN. The Nurse Intern will focus on the health and wellness of the patient while providing safe, essential nursing care for patients and families with the primary goal of extending the student experience and focusing on learning opportunities related to basic functions of the RN role. This role is a temporary position that may last up to 15 months.

Major Responsibilities:
1. Completes Gundersen Health System (GHS) orientation and education requirements, maintains competency and practices and contributes to the GHS Mission and Strategic Plan.
2. Contributes to assessment by collecting and documenting data at the direction of the RN. All of the Nurse Intern's documentation must be verified for accuracy and cosigned each shift by the RN, and the RN must complete and document independent patient assessments as per GHS standard operating procedure.
3. Assists in formulating and carrying out the patient's individualized plan of care. Creation, assessment, revision and evaluation of the patient plan of care cannot be delegated to the Nurse Intern.
4. The Nurse Intern may reinforce patient education that has been initiated by the RN. The intern does not initiate patient education or evaluate patient learning.
5. Provides direct patient care and prescribed treatment, assists with ADLs, and encourages the patient's self-care; documents interventions and patient response.
6. As per the "Nurse Intern Roles and Responsibilities" document, the Nurse Intern will administer and document administration of medication at the point of care and under the direct supervision of the RN.

7. Adheres to regular and predictable attendance.

8. Personally interacts, engages with and cares for patients.

9. Ensures patient safety.

10. Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested.

Education and Learning:
REQUIRED
High School Diploma or equivalency

Must be qualified to graduate from a baccalaureate nursing program or associate nursing program between December and May following the summer internship

Work Experience:
DESIRED
1 year of experience in a healthcare environment working as a Certified Nursing Assistant or direct patient care related position.

License and Certifications:
REQUIRED
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) or Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
