This environment provides a strong foundation in nursing and clinical skills. The unit serves the medical surgical population by managing chronic and acute onset diseases. The types of patients we serve are those with multi-system management needs such as infectious disease, wound management, pneumonia, sepsis, COPD, diabetes and gastro-intestinal conditions, and post-surgical patients. We also coordinate management of patients needing surgical interventions, EGD, colonoscopy, outpatient infusion/chemo, and anti-coagulation therapies. Overview: The Medical Surgical unit, also known as Med-Surg, is a specialty unit that makes up the foundation of nursing. The Medical Surgical unit at Mercy Springfield is a unit that manages acute medical surgical patients with a wide range of diagnoses and care needs. Functionally, this unit houses and cares for patients who are preparing for or recovering from medical and surgical interventions. This can include care of patients with illnesses such as pneumonia and sepsis; as well as pre and post op management of pain, wound care, and monitoring for any complications post procedure. The Med-Surg unit also manages chronic conditions such as diabetes, COPD, and chronic kidney disease. Service lines include oncology, nephrology, urology, gastroenterology, and many more. Given the generalized nature of the Med-Surg unit and the amount of variation in patient conditions, the acuity of patients vary. Qualifications:
