MongoDB's mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build anywhere-on the edge, on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 developers joining MongoDB every month, it's no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.

MongoDB is seeking an exceptional Senior Product Manager to lead our Core Database Networking & Observability platform - the foundational infrastructure that powers communication between MongoDB database components. This internal platform serves as the backbone of MongoDB's distributed architecture, enabling seamless communication between database nodes while providing comprehensive internal monitoring of system performance.

In this role, you'll define the strategic direction for two critical areas:

  1. The intra-database networking layer that enables MongoDB's distributed database capabilities (70% focus)
  2. Internal observability capabilities that provide insights into database networking performance, with some customer-facing monitoring features (30% focus)

You'll own the product vision and roadmap for the Core Database Networking & Observability team, balancing intra-database communication infrastructure needs with internal monitoring requirements. Working closely with engineering teams and other stakeholders, you'll drive innovations in both our communication infrastructure and internal monitoring capabilities. Your team's mission is to optimize the components that enable distributed process communication while maintaining efficient resource usage and providing low-overhead observability tools primarily for MongoDB's internal teams."

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive product strategy and roadmap for MongoDB's internal database networking and monitoring capabilities
  • Define the vision for high-performance, reliable inter-node communication within MongoDB's distributed architecture
  • Drive the evolution of internal monitoring solutions and tooling that provide deep visibility into database networking performance
  • Guide the adoption and implementation of modern observability standards like OpenTelemetry across MongoDB's networking infrastructure
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to optimize network communication patterns and resource utilization across MongoDB's distributed system
  • Partner with engineering teams to ensure technical feasibility, performance, scalability, and resilience of our networking infrastructure
  • Define and track success metrics for both networking performance and monitoring effectiveness
  • Champion best practices for low-overhead monitoring and observability within MongoDB's infrastructure
  • Contribute to architectural decisions around networking protocols and monitoring implementation
  • Bridge technical communication between networking infrastructure team and other MongoDB teams
  • Guide the development of any customer-facing monitoring features that extend from our internal capabilities
  • Effectively communicate complex technical concepts about our networking and observability infrastructure to various stakeholders

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in product management or related technical role, focusing on distributed systems, networking, or observability
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems architecture and networking protocols (TCP/IP, TLS, gRPC) in the context of database systems
  • Extensive experience implementing and scaling observability solutions using OpenTelemetry and similar frameworks in distributed environments
  • Proven track record of successful collaboration with infrastructure engineering teams
  • Strong technical acumen - must be able to engage deeply in technical discussions about networking protocols and monitoring systems
  • Experience balancing internal platform requirements with downstream impact on other teams
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to make data-driven decisions
  • Strong communication skills, particularly in explaining complex technical concepts to various technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Background in database systems or distributed data platforms preferred
  • Passion for building robust, scalable infrastructure and monitoring solutions

This is a unique opportunity to impact the strategic direction of the leading modern database platform. If you have a blend of technical expertise and product vision, we would love to hear from you!
