Job Summary

92NY's Art Center offers a wide variety of afterschool and weekend visual art classes for children/teens ages 4 - 17. The Art Center welcomes over 300 children and teens each semester with classes led by Teaching Artists. The 92NY's Art Center Teaching Assistant Program offers participants a hands-on classroom experience that provides tools and techniques for working in the field of visual art education. Classes run from September to January and then from January until mid June.



Job Responsibilities Include

    Support and collaborate with lead Teaching Artists in weekly art classes. Teaching Assistants work in a mentorship relationship with Art Center children's faculty who are experienced with lesson planning, classroom development and management.
  • Provide additional support and assistance to students and help foster a creative and supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Assist with drop-off and pick up for students, distributing supplies and classroom set up/clean up.
  • Opportunities are given towards the end of the semester for Teaching Assistants to develop and lead a lesson with mentor Teaching Artist.


Experience, Education, & Skills Desired

  • The ideal Teaching Assistant is currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in visual arts education or possess a BFA in visual arts and is looking to gain teaching experience.
  • Candidates should enjoy working with children in a creative classroom setting. Teaching Assistants must make a commitment to the full semester, attending every scheduled class and finding substitutes from Art Center roster for the classes they cannot attend. Absences are strongly discouraged.


Work Environment & Requirements

  • Subject to class assignments, which are generally from 4:00pm-5:30pm on weekday afternoons and during the daytime on weekends. In addition to class time, Teaching Assistants are expected to arrive 15 minutes prior to class and stay 15 minutes after class ends to assist with student drop off and pick up.

Per Diem Compensation

$23/hour
