Overview

**1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week. Rotating shifts including on call, nights and evenings required. Holiday rotation.

Must be a graduate of approved school of surgical technology. CST preferred. Associates degree preferred.**

Minimum pay is $25.01 per hour. Full-time, benefits eligible.

Demonstrates competence defined (*) by functioning in the scrub responsibilities on the operative team in providing family-centered age-appropriate care and service to patients from the age of birth to 21 years, and selected adult patients. Decontaminates and processes surgical instrumentation and supplies.The Surgical Technologist performs various tasks and duties to provide technical assistance and support to the surgical staff and physicians both during and in the turnover of surgical procedures. Understands the procedures being performed and assures that all equipment, instrumentation, and supplies are available for the case. Responsible for ensuring proper handling of the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during surgical procedures. Assists with surgical specimens and documentation.

Responsibilities

1. Functions as the sterile team member on surgical cases, responsible for aseptic technique, and counts of sponges, needles, miscellaneous items. Possesses extensive knowledge of instrumentation and sutures and surgeon preferences, being constantly aware of and anticipating surgeon's needs.

2. Assists under direct supervision and request of the surgeon in suctioning, holding retractors, providing counter traction, sponging, touching forceps with cautery and following and cutting suture. Does not cut tissue, cauterize, or place or tie suture.

3. Utilizes knowledge of anatomy and surgical procedures to anticipate patient and surgeon needs before they arise to keep operative time to a minimum. Observes and reports for correction any breaks in aseptic technique that could cause infection and harm to the patient.

4. Assist the registered nurse with non-sterile, circulating duties, i.e., sending lab work, specimens, cultures, blood products, obtaining supplies for the sterile team and anesthesia, and checking patient consents.

5. Fills out appropriate lab slips to send patient blood tests and cultures to the laboratory. Obtains appropriate supplies from Central Processing or operating room stock to give to the operating team for use during surgery. Calls lab and/or blood bank to obtain lab results and blood product availability information. Communicates information to anesthesia and surgical team so the patient's status is monitored. Logs pathology specimen utilized for diagnostic purposes so each is accounted for accurately.

6. Responsible for covering non-staffed hours in the operating room on an on-call basis.

7. Coordinates and performs the requisitioning of instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical cases.

8. Performs cleaning and disinfection duties in the operating room.

9. Assures that all designated supply locations are restocked daily, and expiration dates of sterility are checked.

10. Maintains awareness of patient care costs and performs role in a cost-effective manner.

11. Assists in processing operating room charges.

12. Assists in collecting/entering computer data.

13. Participates in peer review as appropriate.

14. Participates in research activities conducted in the operating rooms or in data/specimen collection in studies involving surgical patient care.

15. Participates in evaluation process of new equipment and supplies for intraoperative patient care.

16. Scrubs with new personnel and teaches instrumentation, set-up of the surgical field, aseptic technique, and anticipation of the surgeon?s needs. Precepts newer surgical technologists as they begin to perform duties independently.

17. Participates in the educational process and acts as a role model for surgical technologist students affiliating at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

18. Reports to Operating Room staff via in service any seminars attended. Helps present specialty surgeries in which (s)he has expertise at operating room care conferences.

19. Identifies own learning needs and seeks assistance as needed.

20. Performs other duties as assigned.



Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. High school graduate

2. Satisfactory completion of an approved Surgical Technologist course (prefer Associates degree)

3. Demonstrates manual dexterity

4. Demonstrates versatility and adaptability

5. Demonstrates a theoretical and clinical ability to conform to standards of asepsis and infection control

6. Possess ability to hear and respond appropriately to surgeon and co-worker requests

7. Operating or delivery room experience preferred.

8. Demonstrated and documented competency in the scrub role

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must be able to see, hear, speak, read and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation with little or no difficulty.

2. Must be able to stand a minimum of 5 hours consecutively, frequently.

3. Must be able to independently lift up to 25 lbs., frequently.

4. Must be able to move or reposition patients of any weight or size with the assistance of another person(s) and/or equipment.
