The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) provides for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in the City of New York and maintains and enhances the transportation infrastructure crucial to the economic vitality and quality of life of City residents. DOT oversees one of the most complex urban transportation networks in the world. DOT's staff manages an annual operating budget of $1.1 billion, along with 6,300 miles of streets and highways, over 12,000 miles of sidewalk, nearly 800 bridges and tunnels, including the iconic East River bridges, and the Staten Island Ferry. DOT staff also design bicycle facilities, bus lanes, and public plazas.

DOT seeks a detail-oriented and organized attorney with some regulatory and compliance experience to assist with a mix of assignments involving the receipt and use of federal and state grant funding in order to facilitate transportation project planning, design and construction implementation. The successful candidate will draft and review federal, state, and city legislation and regulations; draft agency compliance procedures; conduct legal research; and prepare legal memoranda. The successful candidate will have an ability to analyze complex legislation and regulations pertaining to multiple federal agencies (including FHWA, FTA, FEMA, and HUD), handle a high volume of matters, and function under tight time constraints. Strong communication skills, both oral and written are required, as well as the ability to prioritize projects.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:
To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.

Preferred Skills

Preference given to candidates possessing at least one year of legal experience, concentrating on regulatory and administrative law.
