School of Arts & Sciences-Newark is the second largest unit in the Rutgers system, with two colleges NCAS and UC-N, over 19 academic departments and programs, over 31 programs of study, over 4,000 undergraduate students, and over 1,000 faculty and staff. We serve all undergraduates at Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N); and offer a broad selection of more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate courses a year in more than 40 subjects.
Posting Summary
Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking as Student Counselor (business title, Academic Advisor). Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Recruitment and Community Engagement, this Student Counselor provides academic advising and counseling to undergraduate students.

This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:

  • Counsels assigned caseload of Newark College of Arts and Sciences (NCAS) and University College-Newark (UC-N) students, including, facilitating declaration of major, progress toward graduation, and successful career and/or professional development for them.
  • Coordinates the Peer Advisor program.
  • Works with OAS recruitment and community engagement team to assist with the coordination, development, and facilitation of initiatives targeting prospective and incoming students as well as currently enrolled undergraduate students.
  • Contributes to school-to-school transfers, re-enrollment, commencement activities, major/minor fairs, and other special events.

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in student counseling, college student personnel, psychology, social work, education, higher education administration, or a related field and two years relevant experience in academic counseling/advisement; or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of first year and probation student populations and programs, student development and counseling theories and applications, and workshop design and presentation

  • Interact successfully and confidentially with a wide range of individuals at all levels of the University community

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to multitask and function autonomously with limited supervision
  • Work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, customer-service focused environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • Experience in a university or other educational setting with experience in program development and conducting workshops for diverse populations
  • Knowledge of overseeing student leaders and/peer advisor programs.


Equipment Utilized

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Student Records Database (SRDB), degree audits, Student Success Collaborative (SSC), in-house applications, and any database or program utilized by the University to perform the duties of this position now or in the future
  • Must be familiar with or learn all the office equipment, software, and specialized programs and/or materials needed to support the effective and efficient performance of this position.


Physical Demands and Work Environment


  • OAS is a fast-paced, deadline-driven, stakeholder-focused environment
  • Responsibilities will include attendance at and participation in evening and weekend activities as needed
