Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job Duties: The Assistant Director (AD) is a full-time, career staff member who serves as a member of the management team within Residential & Community Living. As one of 8 functional units within Housing, Dining, & Auxiliary Enterprises, R&CL is responsible for the well-being and development of over 11,000 residents and manages the placement services for all students and families who live in university housing. R&CL operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and has on-call staff available every day of the year. The team is responsible for 330+ student staff, $7.3 million operating budget and an annual major maintenance budget of $100,000. Under the general supervision of the Director, the AD utilizes an equity mindset as they: -Serve as the primary supervisor for an area comprising of 2,000-3,000 residents living in one of 4 campus neighborhoods. -Directly supervise 2-5 professional staff, and oversees an additional 2-5 professional staff and 20-40 RAs. -Lead their neighborhood in the development and implementation of a comprehensive community development strategy grounded in the curricular approach. -Ensure that the staff create a strong sense of belonging within the individual communities within their neighborhood, which may include undergraduates, graduates, and/or students with families. -Work with their staff to ensure effective management of a student conduct and students of concern case load consisting of students living within their community. -Develop effective working relationships with the 60+ colleagues that make up our R&CL staff. As part of a team of Assistant Directors, the AD is responsible for: -Overseeing and sustaining the daily operations of the Student Life function. -Implementing a comprehensive staff orientation, training, and development program. -The recruitment and selection of both student and professional staff members. -Working as a cohesive team to maintain a smooth and consistent student life operation over 4 distinct neighborhoods. -Serves on departmental and campus committees as determined necessary by the Director. Job Functions and Percentages of Time: 25% Supervision of Staff * Leads and develops a neighborhood team into a cohesive unit who work effectively together. * Serves as direct supervisor to 2-5 professional staff and has functional supervision over 2-5 additional professional staff, 20-40 Resident Assistants, and various other student staff positions. * Designs, facilitates, and participates in the on-boarding and training of professional and student staff, both during the pre-Fall training periods and on-going during the year, as needed. * Evaluates direct reports - both annually and on an ongoing basis - and highlights successes and provides meaningful and actionable feedback for improvement where appropriate. 25% Student Conduct & Mental Health Management * Work with the neighborhood team to ensure that student conduct cases are adjudicated in a timely manner and in adherence to departmental sanctioning standards. * Oversees the student of concern caseload in their area, including meeting with residents in distress as needed. * Plays an active role in the coordination of care for students of concern. Includes frequent communication and collaboration with Student Conduct, campus Social Workers, RD, and other staff as needed to provide effective support for students of concern. 25% Departmental Operations * Responsible for the oversight of daily operations of their neighborhood in supporting the needs of their residents. * Leads, as assigned, an array of departmental projects that sustain the Student Life operations of R&CL. * Leads and participates in the recruitment of student and professional staff. * Communicates and collaborates with HDAE partners (i.e. Residential Operations, Campus Dining, etc.) on a regular basis to support the daily operation of the neighborhood and Student Life function. * Communicates on a regular basis with the Director and team of ADs to strategize around and address an array of issues impacting the daily operation of the Student Life function. 20% Community Development & Education * Utilizes an equity mindset and a residential curriculum framework to the oversight of the development and implementation of educational plans for each of the communities within their neighborhood. * Evaluates and assesses the effectiveness of the community development plans, educational plans, and the curricular approach both within individual communities and the neighborhood as a whole. * Collaborates with the team of ADs to assess and set priorities in the continual progress of our residential curriculum model. * Collaborates with other R&CL sub-units to ensure that all resident interactions that reasonably fits within our residential curriculum approach to serving students is accomplished. 5% Community Safety & Crisis Management * Serves as first point of contact for live-in staff in managing high level conduct, student mental health, or crisis situations. * Provides after-hours consultation to direct, guide, and support on-call staff in response to crises and emergencies. * As part of the management team, assesses and strategizes around the systems and policies in place to maintain reasonable safety measures in campus housing.
