PRODUCTION SUPERVISOR

(2nd Shift)

Department: 06598 - Production

Full-Time/Part-Time: Full Time

Reports to (Title): 2nd Shift Superintendent

FLSA: Exempt - Salaried

Job Summary:

Provide direct supervision to hourly employees in the manufacturing and packaging of meat products. Train, direct, coach and lead the production work team in the day-to-day operations to meet production, safety, quality and sanitation requirements. Drive the communication of production goals and objectives as well as results in order to effectively motivate the team to maintain a high standard of product quality while maximizing plant efficiencies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Ensures standard operating procedures and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Quality requirements are followed at all times.

  • Monitor and train employees for adherence to good manufacturing practices (GMP)
  • Oversees the pre-operational setup and adjustments of equipment and ensures preventative maintenance has been performed on all equipment according to schedule.
  • Participates in safety/environmental self-audits & visual checks, champions all safety activities for the department and helps to develop and meet plant safety goals.
  • Conducts regular meetings with employees to provide training and facilitate communication.
  • Participates in the production scheduling process and provides input to establish headcount needs based upon volume requirements.
  • Maintain a competent, trained work force at determined headcount levels to meet production needs.
  • Evaluate the performance of hourly employees and provide training as needed.
  • Monitor raw material needs and supply. Order needed materials from in-house supply. Follow up on all requisitions, projects, and requests.
  • Ensure compliance to company policies and enforce safety regulations.
  • Ensure adherence to product specifications throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Responsible for coaching & directing a team of hourly employees to meet production schedules.
  • Track cost savings projects to meet objectives and develops or recommends future cost savings projects to improve production methods, equipment performance and quality of product.
  • Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of department and/or production crew.
  • Address employee relations issues promptly and effectively, issue corrective actions when needed.
  • Initiate and/or suggest plans to motivate employees to achieve department goals.
  • Maintain department time and production records and ensure accuracy.
  • Confer with other supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments.
  • Perform activities of employees supervised on an as-needed basis.
  • Follow other job-related instructions and perform other job-related duties as requested, subject to all applicable state and federal laws.
  • Position supervises 35 to 50 direct hourly production and/or sanitation associates
  • In the employee's absence an alternate Production Supervisor (different department) will complete the roles and activities this position is responsible for.
  • This is a 2nd shift position (2:00pm to 11pm) or modified weekly scheduled of days worked including many Saturdays.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience requirement

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or related field is required.
  • 2 to 4 years of meat industry experience preferred.
  • Must have strong and effective verbal and written communication.


  • Must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office software for department reporting and record keeping.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish a plus.
  • Must have a strong reasoning ability with the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draws valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Preferred: College Degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Animal Science, Industrial Technology, Business, etc. and/or related field preferred. Two years quality experience in a food manufacturing environment preferred.

Language and Technical Skills requirement

  • Understanding of HACCP, microbiology, regulatory and Quality Process Control.


Reasoning Ability :

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of technical information in mathematical and/or narrative form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to think logically, unemotionally and quickly to take appropriate actions needed to correct impromptu situations. Must be observant and aware of surroundings and be able to transfer accumulated knowledge to differing situations.

  • The employee is required to stand, sit, walk, push, pull, climb, reach overhead and bend to the floor.
  • The employee is subject to production environment approximately 90 percent of the work time. (wet environment with temperatures < 45 degrees)
  • High noise levels from operating machines.
  • Physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts.
  • Skin exposure to animal fat, grease, and chemicals.



WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate. When the employee is required to perform duties in the production area, the employee will be continuously exposed to temperatures ranging from 35 - 45 degrees. The noise level in the work environment is sufficient to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Personal Protective Equipment is required.
