Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $25.62- $44.11. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $25.63 - $27.35.

Job Closing Date

About the Job

Under the direction of the UROC Assistant Director, the incumbent will assist in implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion undergraduate research initiatives, including undergraduate research fellowships, external experiential learning programs, research travel grants, research opportunity advising, research and graduate preparation workshops, and diversity outreach. The UROC Equity Advisor will also assist in coordinating the nine week UROC Summer Undergraduate Research Institute for student scholars from UC Merced and external campuses. Provides counseling and general academic, personal, financial, and career counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to undocumented students, formerly incarcerated youth, foster youth, transfer students, and "at-promise" populations (e.g., low-income, first-generation college, and BIPOC/underrepresented populations). The incumbent will also serve as the UROC program liaison to the student support offices in the Bright Success Center, including Services for Undocumented Students and Guardian Scholars.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides counseling and advice but may escalate unusual situations to the supervisor. Provides counseling and general academic, personal, financial, and career counseling across disciplines and colleges /schools to undocumented students, formerly incarcerated youth, foster youth, transfer students, and "at-promise" populations (e.g., low-income, first-generation college, and underrepresented populations).
  • Assists and trains students with the academic research process, including research ethics and lab training, developing a question and hypothesis, selecting appropriate quantitative or qualitative research methods, evaluating evidence, and writing reports.
  • Assists students with graduate school applications, program selection, and personal statement development. Monitors students' academic progress and assists students in developing problem-solving and self-management skills. Advocates on behalf of student concerns.
  • Assumes liaison responsibility with academic departments, faculty, community organizations, and external systemwide program partnerships. Works with student services and academic departments, faculty, and community partners to help resolve specific student academic and success issues.
  • Assists with campus efforts to conduct comprehensive analyses of issues and needs specific to undergraduate research for undocumented students, formerly incarcerated youth, foster youth, transfer students, and at-promise" populations and provides solutions and alternatives to problem areas. Maintains a collaborative role in creating, implementing, and interpreting undergraduate research needs assessments, evaluation, and program assessment duties.
  • Tracks progress of undocumented students, formerly incarcerated youth, foster youth, transfer students UROC scholars, collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on performance, persistence, and degree completion.
  • Trains and provides indirect and direct supervision to student staff.
Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university, or equivalent experience/training. (Required)
  • Advanced degree from an accredited university. (Preferred)
  • One year of directly related experience in a student services function or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. (Required)

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation.
  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. (Preferred)
  • Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Basic knowledge of student immigration and visa processes pertaining to international students and scholars. (Preferred)
  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning.
  • Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking.
  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures. (Preferred)
  • Understanding of University rules and regulations. (Preferred)
