General Responsibilities
Under general supervision of the Electronics Supervisor performs skilled work in maintenance, routine repairs and preventive Maintenance of alarm and access control systems, transmissions and monitoring systems for all process control for utilities and building operations, electrical and electronic control systems. To provide an environment that is comfortable, safe, healthy and conducive to teaching, learning and working.
Work Performed
Responsible for programming, installing, modifying, maintaining, repairing and overhauling of all control systems installed at Howard Community College facilities including but not limited to:
o fire alarm (to include NCC, Panels and Field devices)
o access control system
o surveillance equipment (Field devices and Video Management software)
o Key Control system
o Key management system
o Mass notification/Clocks
o Elevators (includes monthly fire alarm phase operation testing required by State of MD)
o Two way radios for all departments
o Duress Systems
o Exterior Emergency Phones
o Parking Garage Vehicle counting systems
o Inventory Tracking System
o Network connectivity including both copper and fiber terminations
* Performs diagnostic tests on digital systems Determines maintenance methods and sequence and/or maintains systems, components, fixtures and equipment in accordance with established work order maintenance
schedules, service calls or specific assignments by supervisor. Performs work according to manufacturer's
specifications, Departmental guidelines, trade practices, blueprints, shop drawings and schematics.
* Inspects control systems to determine preventive maintenance, routine and emergency repairs.
* Reports discrepancies or necessary follow-ups to supervisor.
* Performs duties and responsibilities with view toward Department goals, energy conservation and support of
academic and institutional goals.
* Assist with the development and implements tests and inspections of fire alarm, access, and surveillance
equipment procedures.
* Recommend materials and makes material list to be used for cost estimates.
* As required, estimates materials needed and records time and materials expended on each work order.
* Troubleshoots and repairs electronic and mechanical equipment.
* Performs shutdown and startup of electronic systems.
* Performs tasks in various trades assigned and scheduled by the supervisor to maintain college buildings and
equipment.
* Performs preventive maintenance of assigned equipment.
* Ability to observe and practice working habits and maintain security of buildings and Systems, and
effectively work individually or in teams as well as with diverse groups.
* Ability to work effectively in a service oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities.
* Ability to follow through and carry out assignments, problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
* Establishes and maintains a positive and cooperative working relationship with members of department and
campus community.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
* Assumes responsibility of Electronic Systems Department in absence of supervisor
* Acts in role of essential personnel for emergencies
* Trains end users in operation of life safety systems
Minimum Education Required High School or equivalent

Other Knowledge Required
* Must possess good oral and written communication skills and be able to follow oral and written
instructions and to express ideas effectively and concisely.
* Minimum of 2 years of installation and repair experience in commercial security, access and CCTV
systems.
* High School Diploma
* Accredited Trade school or Apprenticeship
* Knowledge of Electric, Electronic, Pneumatic and DDC controls.
* Advanced Knowledge of Computer Networks
* Basic knowledge of low voltage and network cabling installation
* Ability to work within the overall organization of the Facilities department and work with skilled and unskilled personnel, staff and administrators.
* Must possess the technical knowledge and skill to perform minor carpentry work and repairs.
* Basic knowledge and skill level in alarms and control systems; working knowledge and skills in additional
functional areas.
* Basic skill level in maintenance and repair procedures including preventive maintenance, breakdown repair
and trouble-shooting, construction, installation and fabrication techniques typical in trade; perform
mathematical computations of trade.
* Knowledge of proper use and maintenance of hand and power tools related to job functions. Strong
demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and systems diagrams.
* Maintains proficiency at current level of and continually updates knowledge through appropriate courses,
seminars, publications and contacts with others in the trade.
* OSHA Safety Regulations

* Physical Requirements
* Ability to lift 75 pounds; 40 lbs. from floor to overhead, and walk 10 feet carrying 45 lbs.
* Ability to work from scaffolds (s) and climb ladders
* Physical strength and stamina to perform heavy physical tasks for long periods.
* Ability to make quick decisions under stress.
* Valid Maryland driver's license.
* Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
* Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Regular attendance is a requirement of this job.

* Performs all duties while considering the impact of any actions on the college's sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity.
Working Conditions
Requires performing regular job functions in an environment, which includes exposure to continuous physical elements or a number of disagreeable working conditions with frequent exposure to minor injuries or health hazards. Work in extremes of noise, temperature and humidity. Work in Mechanical rooms, crawl spaces and tunnels where conditions will be dirty, dusty and sometimes muddy. Work in high places on roofs or ladders and on scaffolds. Work in close proximity to electrical transformers and switcher with high voltage in excess of 13,000 volts. The use of personal protective clothing and equipment. Work schedule is 40 hours a week. Work overtime and call-in, as requested. Must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies or when needed to meet the ongoing mission of the College.
