Research Laboratory Mechanic

The Test Facilities Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering (TFOME) contract at the NASA Glenn Research Center, Neil A. Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, Ohio is searching for candidates to perform mechanical-related technical assignments within a research laboratory test environment. This position will support operations of research test facilities by maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and optimizing research hardware and mechanical systems or equipment.

This individual may be required to perform the following job duties:

General maintenance on mechanical vacuum pumping equipment, diffusion pumps, cryo-pumps, steam ejector systems, heat exchangers, and cryogenic vaporizers.
1. Operating, maintaining, and calibrating leak detection systems. Inspecting and evaluating mechanical equipment and facility operating systems.
2. Assisting in the installation and operation of intricate research test packages in various test facilities.
3. Welding horizontally, overhead, and vertically using oxy-acetylene, AC-DC electric arc, M.I.G., and T.I.G. using a variety of material including stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, copper, brass, etc.
4. Laying out and building complex tubing systems using flaring machines and tubing benders.
5. Fabricating, installing, operating, and maintaining mechanical control test panels, cryogenic systems including liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, or liquid helium.
6. Operating hydraulic systems, high-pressure gas systems including gas tubers, pressure reduction stations, pressure pumps, and seals, etc.
7. Disassembling repairs, reassembling and verifying various types of valves, valve operators, and pressure regulators.
8. Operating facility cranes, forklifts, rigging equipment and material, including lifting straps, chain hoists, etc., large mechanical tools such as a drill press, power hacksaw, band saw, shears, pipe threaders, brakes, rollers, lathes, and grinders, as well as small power tools including air wenches, drills, grinders, etc.
9. May work with and be required to have a basic understanding of operations and maintenance of research test facilities, environmental test chambers, mass spectrometer leak detectors, and vacuum systems.

This individual must:

• Have a minimum of four (4) years of related experience working as a Journeyperson Mechanic, such as a Maintenance Mechanic or Machine Repair Technician, etc.
• Have a Journeyperson certificate in Research Laboratory Mechanic skills, or equivalent vocational training with sufficient combined work experience and skills in another mechanical trade such as maintenance mechanic, machine repair, etc., or an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Engineering Technology.
• Be capable of reading mechanical prints and drawings and using computers with touch screen operations for general daily reporting activities.
• Have good attention to detail and follow verbal and written instructions from engineering or supervision.
