Brown and Caldwell is a pioneer and recognized industry leader for over 70 years in the development and implementation of innovative wastewater treatment, solids management, and energy recovery solutions. We are looking to expand our team in Oregon with a Senior Principal Engineer in Solids and Energy, specializing in compliance. You will have an essential role in our Northwest Area business. In collaboration with the Northwest Area leader, Client Service Managers, Technical Service Leaders, and the Marketing Manager, you will maintain and develop client relationships, connect BC solutions to client needs, and lead project teams in quality project delivery.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Brown and Caldwell's Portland office is looking for a technical lead and Design Manager to help manage and execute infrastructure projects for our Oregon and southern Washington municipal clients. In this role you will supervise the work of others, provide technical support in specialized areas, and contribute to a growing a team to effectively deliver infrastructure projects.

This position may be based near one of our offices in Portland, OR; Tacoma, WA; or Seattle, WA. Hybrid work is allowed.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include civil/mechanical engineering and design management for a variety of projects to provide planning, evaluation, design and construction related activities for water, wastewater, and stormwater conveyance systems, pumping systems and related facilities. In this role you will supervise the work of others and provide technical support in specialized areas. Our ideal candidate will be a design manager and technical resource, support area leadership and clients in the Portland area and surrounding region, and participate in business development activities. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:



  • Lead teams to develop and prepare specifications, detailed design drawings, reports, planning, and engineering services during construction.
  • Coordinate technical and quality control reviews of study, planning and design documents.
  • Prepare calculations, models and other technical deliverables for civil/utility, conveyance and infrastructure related projects.
  • Direct the work of project teams including other disciplines (drafters, designers, and other engineers) with effective communication and coordination.
  • Utilize internal project management tools and resources to provide successful management of large projects that meet or exceed the project success metrics.
  • Coordinate with project managers, client service managers, and other project personnel from other disciplines.
  • Mentor, oversee, and direct the work of drafters, designers, and junior level engineers assigned to projects.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to clients and other engineers for professional meetings and conferences.
  • Contribute to development of scope, schedule and budget for projects.
  • Contribute to proposals and presentations including project understanding and approaches.
  • Execute activities on projects for master planning and modeling of water/wastewater/stormwater conveyance systems.


Minimum Qualifications



  • B.S. in Engineering and licensed as a Professional Engineer in Oregon and Washington, or have the ability to obtain licensure via reciprocity within six months.
  • 5 or more years of experience including successfully developing, contracting, delivering public infrastructure engineering projects.
  • Desire and drive to deliver successful projects and win prospective work through engaged teamwork.
  • Ability to focus on design management needs while balancing multiple priorities to include but not limited to industry standard technical requirements, bidding, and construction management services.
  • Effective and focused facilitation of team coordination meetings, both internally and with clients.
  • Development and management of project management/execution plans, quality management plans, and partnering with our health and safety group to develop appropriate health and safety / field work safety plans.
  • Ability to work independently yet interface with resources outside your core teams to effectively "connect the dots" of other resources within the company.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-control, social awareness, and relationship management.
  • Mentorship and teaching. Ability to effectively guide others in learning both technical and non-technical aspects of project delivery to achieve high quality outcomes and deliverables.
  • Experience in having coordinated and delivered multi-disciplined engineering projects.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Focused experience on project delivery, oversight, and project management.
  • Demonstration of highly functional and effective oral and written communications.
  • Municipal project experience is preferred, but other multi-discipline project experience such as industrial water/wastewater would also be considered.
  • Possess a positive, can-do attitude, be flexible and self-motivated, and have an attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record


Salary Range:Theanticipatedstarting payrange for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and maybemore or lessdependingupon skills, experience,and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.



  • Salary: $118,000 - 161,000
