Position Summary
The University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine (SOM) Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology is seeking a full-time academic breast surgeon to join our Breast Surgery Program. This position is being recruited at the Open Rank level; salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The UNM Division of Surgical Oncology currently consists of fellowship-trained surgical oncologists, breast surgeons, and colorectal surgeons who provide multidisciplinary care of patients with a full spectrum of malignancies. Additionally, our division includes plastic surgeons dedicated to breast reconstruction. Surgeons in our group are actively engaged in cancer clinical trials and undergraduate as well as graduate medical education, including fellows in Complex General Surgical Oncology. The UNM Department of Surgery boasts a robust infrastructure of services and resources to help achieve academic goals, and leadership opportunities are available.
UNM serves a large, medically complex population and is a consultative resource for the State of New Mexico and the Four Corners region of the Southwest. Outpatient oncology services are provided through the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC), the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. UNMCCC is one of only 57 cancer centers in the nation to be designated by the NCI as a comprehensive cancer center, the highest federal designation and rating for cancer centers. The 134 oncology physicians, 122 cancer research scientists, and staff are particularly focused on discovering the causes and the cures for cancers that disproportionately affect the people of the American Southwest - primarily Hispanic, American Indian, and Non-Hispanic White - with strikingly different patterns of cancer incidence, mortality and disparity.
The UNM Health Science Center (HSC) is the largest academic health complex in the state of New Mexico. Located on the University of New Mexico campus in beautiful Albuquerque, NM, the HSC combines its four mission areas - educations, research, patient care and community outreach - to provide New Mexicans with the highest level of health care.
New Mexico is known as the Land of Enchantment; the City of Albuquerque is a beautiful city with mountain to the east and a mesa to the west. It is ideal for outdoor activities and sports all year-round including running, hiking, biking and skiing. The State of New Mexico is multicultural and diverse with excellent local cuisine, breathtaking sunsets, multiple cultural and historic sites, lakes, rivers, deserts and mountains.
