The Division of Natural and Built Environment (NBE) is one of four divisions under the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) at UMKC. NBE Division includes the Faculties of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Architecture, Urban Planning, and Design, and Civil Engineering. The Earth and Environmental Sciences Program (EES) includes Environmental Sciences, Geology and Geospatial Science, and Environmental Studies with BA/BS, MS, PhD, and 3+2 MS programs. NBE faculty and students address challenges across disciplinary boundaries with strengths in Natural Hazards, STEM education, geoarchaeology, hydrology, and sustainability. UMKC is also home to the Missouri Institute for Defense and Energy (MIDE) which consists of faculty, professional staff and studies from a range of academic disciplines to bridge academia and industry. MIDE is founded on bridging fundamental physics with applied engineering to solve longstanding challenges in the defense, energy, and related commercial sectors. As of 2023, MIDE has secured $60M in externally awarded grants and contracts, and supports over 100 students, faculty, and staff. In 2015, MIDE was presented with the R&D100 award for a defense technology that led to two small businesses and two licensed patents.

Job Description

The Division of Natural and Built Environment at the University of Missouri- Kansas City invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in the broad areas of geochemistry and mineralogy. We seek a candidate who can characterize materials for geological, environmental science, and engineering applications utilizing current SEM and XRD instrumentation with expansion to additional instrumentation. Desired areas of expertise include, but are not limited to critical minerals, economic geology, petrology, environmental geology, biogeochemistry, and geotechnical engineering. We are particularly interested in applicants who focus on applied investigations using state-of-the-art laboratory techniques that can include or be synergistic with field research, modeling, and existing research activities at UMKC.

We seek a collaborative colleague who will develop outstanding research programs and impactful scholarship with a commitment to student success. Teaching responsibilities include existing undergraduate and graduate core courses in Earth and Environmental Sciences in addition to developing elective courses within an area of specialization with an emphasis on integrating science and engineering.

This is a 9-month, ranked tenure-track faculty appointment eligible for benefits. The appointment begins with the fall 2025 semester.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in geochemistry or a related field is required by the time of appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate:

* Excellence in research including initiating or continuing an independent extramurally funded research program or serving as a principal investigator in larger collaborative teams,

* A strong commitment to teaching in the classroom,

* Effective mentoring of students in the laboratory and field, and willingness to provide support toward published research and presentations (undergraduate and graduate students),

* Propensity to engage in divisional, school, or university services appropriate to the position, and advance the strategic plan of SSE and UMKC.

Anticipated Hiring Range

This position is 9-month, ranked, tenure-track full-time faculty position with benefits to begin Fall 2025 semester. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with rank, success in externally funded research, credentials, and experience.
