Essential Job Functions
The University Police Department's mission is to provide a safe working, living, and learning environment, through a community-oriented policing philosophy that emphasizes crime prevention and solving crime through partnerships, education and awareness programs, pro-active patrolling and quality officer training. The department provides general and emergency police services, and enforces state laws and university policies on campus 24-7.
Property Security Officers provide professional and courteous security across campus by protecting university property and reporting violations of university policies to the security supervisor and the police supervisor on duty.

Duties & Responsibilities include:

  • Securing/opening certain campus buildings as assigned, and by schedule.
  • Foot patrol in all campus buildings to ensure the protection of university property.
  • Vehicle patrol on all campus property and parking lots while reporting issues, violations, and suspicious incidents to the on-duty police supervisor.
  • Answering fire and trouble alarms when needed in campus buildings.
  • Fill-in for the university library on occasion to ensure patrons are following rules and procedures.
  • Assist App State police officers as directed by the on-duty police supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Securing designated campus buildings based on closing schedules.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and coherently over radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
  • The ability to recognize, identify, and report unusual, suspect, or hazardous activities or conditions across campus.
  • Understand basic protective and security practices.
  • Be able to perform physical functions that include such things as working rotating shifts, walking on foot patrol, climbing stairs while physically checking doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secured.
  • Fill in occasionally to maintain security in Belk Library; monitor floors, ID Patrons, assist in removing Patrons when necessary, monitor Technology desk, report problems to the evening library supervisor, assist AppState Police and Security as directed by that agency.

Physical Demands of Position

  • Must have the ability to drive a state vehicle in all weather conditions.
  • Traverse in and move about in buildings, around campus, up and down hills and stairs, checking buildings and doors.
  • Physical awareness and alert of surroundings at all times for security breaches.
  • Ability to use a mobile and handheld radio.
  • Must stand or remain in a stationary position at a security post, inside and outside in all types of weather for up to 3-4 hours.

Security, Patrol, and Enforcement

  • Lock and unlock buildings following assigned schedules.
  • Review the Event Tracker for specific building openings at the beginning of each shift. Patrol campus buildings and parking lots and report security violations.
  • Provide money escorts when requested.
  • Provide non-emergency medical transports when required.
  • Do walking patrols in the interior of the campus.
  • Respond to routine Blue Light activations when dispatched.
  • Conduct monthly Blue Light maintenance checks and submit a report to the supervisor.
  • Complete weekly lights-out checks and submit to the supervisor.


Communication

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, by clearly communicating on a mobile and handheld radio and by completing written reports.
  • Respond to calls for service from community members on a regular basis and provide verbal responses to their requests.
  • Explain policies to university community members and visitors when required.
  • Demonstrate the ability to relate and interact with members of the department, university and community groups as required.

Technical Knowledge

  • Demonstrate the ability to properly use all assigned equipment.
  • Be able to read and send messages using the university e-mail system.
  • Understand the difference between violations of law and university policy violations and report each to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Attend mandatory in-service training classes when required. Review university and department policies on a regular basis.

Decision Making

  • Recognize security problems and take appropriate actions to resolve.
  • Notify the on-duty supervisor and chain of command when security problems are discovered that cannot be immediately resolved.

Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
