Job Summary

Coordinates Youth Sports Program at assigned school from September through June (Early Start Schools: August through May) in cooperation with MPS Recreation Department Youth Sports Office.

Most Elementary Sport Coordinators are assigned by their respective school, but the Youth Sports Office does create a pool of free agent sport coordinators when applicants apply online that are not assigned to a specific school.

Position Summary

  • ADMINISTRATION
    • Serve as a liaison between the Youth Sport Office, your school, and league play sites.
    • Attend all scheduled Sports Coordination Meetings.
    • Read and understand the Youth Sports Opportunities Handbook.
    • Promote and develop school teams each season for 1st - 5th grade students.
    • Make sure that first aid supplies are available to all teams during practices and games.
    • Register teams online at MilwaukeeRecreation.net by the deadline.
    • Submit entry fee payments to Youth Sports Office by the deadline.
    • Work with school administration to allocate, schedule, and permit practice space for all participating sports programs in an equitable fashion.
    • Ensure practice schedules are on file in the event a copy is requested by the Youth Sports Office.
    • Inventory and monitor sports equipment (Uniforms, balls, etc.) needs in conjunction with school administration and recommend repair or replacements as needed.
    • Submit paysheet to the Youth Sports Office in accordance with the Elementary Sports Coordinator pay sheet schedule.
    • Notify the Youth Sports Office in advance of all forfeited contest.
  • PARTICIPATION/ATHLETE
    • Collect, review, and retain (3 years Max) all Athlete Participation Forms.
    • Check player athletic eligibility.
    • Submit team roster to the Youth Sports Office at least 1 week in advance of first scheduled game.
    • Make sure each player has a uniform or t-shirt in school colors.
    • Schedule and facilitate parent/player meetings prior to the start of each season.
    • Coordinate any student transportation needs.
    • Notify all players and parents of 'Return to Play' procedures for suspected concussion injuries.
    • Provide all players and parents with team game schedules (Including changes), Youth Sports event policies, and notify them of any forfeited contest.
  • COACHES
    • Recruit one (1) coach for each team.
    • Ensure that a coach or team representative attends Mandatory Coaches Meetings.
    • Ensure that all coaches have submitted their required hiring paperwork at least 3 weeks in advance of league start date. COACHES ARE NOT PERMITTED TO START WORKING UNTIL THEY HAVE RECEIVED APPROVAL FROM THE YOUTH SPORTS OFFICE.
    • Submit paysheets to the Youth Sports Office in accordance with the Elementary Coach pay sheet schedule. ONLY PAYSHEETS SUBMITTED ON TIME WILL BE PROCESSED.
    • Work with coach to develop a weekly practice plan, and ensure plans are on file in the event a copy is requested by the Youth Sports Office.
Supervision Required

  • Works under the direction of the School Principal and MPS Recreation Department Youth Sports Office.
Job Requirements

  • Able to meet the scheduling needs required for this position.
  • Behave and appear in a fair, consistent and professional manner.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to attend all MANDATORY MEETINGS and applicable in-service trainings.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience organizing and/or leading sports activities.
  • Ability to participate interactively with a diverse group of youth.
  • CPR/First Aid training/certification.

Working Environment

This environment includes walking, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and possible loud noises when exposed to activities in the gym or similar environment. Staff will be required to supervise groups of children and adults as well as assist in the accommodation of children and/or adults with disabilities (within parameters of provided training).
