Computer Science: Entrepreneurship Lecturer

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering at UC Davis, invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach a course in Hacking 4 Climate: business models for addressing climate challenges. This position is open for the Fall 2024 quarter and possibly subsequent quarters. Fall 2024 service dates are September 23, 2024 - December 13, 2024. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Applicants must be able to teach a course in Hacking 4 Climate: business models for addressing climate challenges. Preference will be given to candidates with significant knowledge of climate change and sustainability issues, a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education in entrepreneurship, strong interest and background in new business design and strategy (familiarity with Lean Startup principles), and a record of effective and innovative teaching at the interface between entrepreneurship, climate change issues, and/or design thinking. Experience teaching the Hacking 4 series courses or Lean Startup methodology, for example, Hacking for Defense or NSF I-Corps, is desired. Familiarity with environmental and social issues in the state of California is also preferable.

The duties for teaching the H4C course include preparing materials for the course, lecturing during the academic year at UC Davis, holding office hours, administering course assessments, grading, managing and mentoring graders and teaching assistants (if applicable), and additional duties as needed.

Hacking 4 Climate serves as the idea refinement and workforce development component of the Aggie Climate action for Equity (ACE): Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Climate Change Solutions program, managed by Venture Catalyst, Office of Research. ACE is a multi-faceted initiative that simultaneously builds internal innovation capacity, workforce development for students, and community engagement on the front-end of the innovation pipeline, while also moving promising climate-impact technologies out of the technology research stage and into the translational product development stage. The program's goal is to nurture technologies, policy interventions, and behavioral innovations that can play a tangible role in climate change mitigation, resilience, and adaptation, with a specific attention to end-user engagement and a focus on positively impacting California's communities most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Salary and appointment level will be commensurate with experience and percentage of appointment. The positions are covered by a collective bargaining agreement (Unit 18).

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. Must also have a Master's degree in business, technology, or other relevant field, or at least 5 years' experience working in or with startups.
