About the Job

The Liu lab uses a combination of biochemical and structural (Cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography) techniques to primarily study macromolecules and macromolecular complexes involved in pathogen infection, with a particular focus on transcriptional complexes. Transcription is the first and central step of gene expression, in which the DNA template is copied into RNA by the RNA polymerase, and defects in transcription and its regulation can lead to a variety of severe human diseases. The long-term goal is to provide a structural basis for understanding the mechanisms of transcription initiation, elongation and termination by RNA polymerase. The employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

Responsibilities

* Conduct and lead scientific research efforts in the study of how transcription happens and how it is regulated by various transcription factors.
* Collaborate with researchers to provide a structural basis for understanding the mechanisms of transcription initiation, elongation and termination by RNAP.
* Study the transition of transcription from initiation to termination phases, the regulation of different transcription stages by various factors and the mechanisms by which RNAP translocates with nucleotide addition.
* Use cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and X-ray crystallography.
* Conduct biochemical experiments.
* Analyze research methods and collect information and related studies to support the research claims.
* Write research reports and give scientific presentations.
* Maintain a safe, clean and functional laboratory.

Focus of Job Responsibilities

70% - Ongoing Research

* Design and implementation of hypothesis-driven research projects.

15% - Analysis & Review

* Analysis and review of generated data and reviewing previously reported scientific literature.

15% - Scientific writing

* Including reporting research findings in manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed biomedical journals and grant writing.
* Generation of figures for manuscripts and grants proposals.
