Core Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Coordinating cost analysis activities across major and complex projects, ensuring cost information is complete, accurate, timely, and aligned with project requirements.
- Preparing, reviewing, and maintaining project cost reports and analysis, providing clear visibility of current and forecast cost performance.
- Monitoring project costs, identifying trends, variances, risks, and emerging issues, and communicating their potential impact to project leadership and relevant stakeholders.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with project management, clients, project controls, finance, engineering, procurement, construction, and site teams.
- Liaising with project management and clients on cost control matters, providing practical analysis and recommendations that support sound decision-making.
- Conducting periodic site visits to verify field cost reporting, investigate discrepancies, and strengthen the quality and reliability of project cost information.
- Reviewing cost data and challenging information where appropriate to ensure reporting reflects the actual position of the project.
- Supporting the development and implementation of effective cost control processes, systems, and practices.
- Applying established systems, processes, and tools to analyze project performance and support accurate forecasting.
- Troubleshooting cost analysis and reporting issues and providing technical guidance to colleagues.
- Assigning, coordinating, and reviewing the work of subordinate cost analysis staff, providing appropriate direction and job-related guidance.
- Leading functional project teams where required and contributing to cross-functional collaboration.
- Preparing and delivering clear reports, presentations, proposals, and recommendations to communicate complex cost matters to project leadership, management, and clients.
- Exercising sound professional judgment when addressing complex cost issues, balancing project objectives, priorities, risks, and commercial considerations.
- Supporting a culture of collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing across the project controls function.
What you'll bring to the role
- A university degree, or equivalent qualification, in a relevant discipline such as cost engineering, project controls, engineering, finance, business, construction management, or a related field. Equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.
- Typically 7+ years of relevant experience in cost analysis, cost control, project controls, or a closely related discipline, preferably within complex engineering, construction, energy, chemicals, or resources projects.
- Advanced knowledge of project cost management principles, processes, systems, and tools, with the ability to apply that knowledge to complex projects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret detailed cost information, identify meaningful trends and variances, and translate analysis into practical recommendations.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing project cost reports, forecasts, and related management information, with a strong focus on quality and accuracy.
- The ability to understand the relationship between field activities, project performance, commitments, actual costs, forecasts, and overall project financial outcomes.
- Strong attention to detail and a disciplined approach to data quality, reporting, documentation, and analysis.
- The confidence to question assumptions, investigate discrepancies, and raise potential cost risks in a constructive and solutions-focused way.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex cost matters clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- The ability to inform and persuade through well-structured reports, presentations, proposals, and discussions with project leadership, management, clients, and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, establish priorities, and manage multiple responsibilities while remaining focused on critical project objectives.
- Experience leading functional project teams or coordinating the work of others, with the ability to provide clear direction, constructive feedback, and technical guidance.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to build effective relationships across different functions, disciplines, locations, and levels of an organization.
- The ability to work effectively in a project environment where priorities can change and decisions may need to be made using incomplete or evolving information.
- A pragmatic approach to problem-solving, with the confidence to make informed recommendations and escalate issues when appropriate.
- Strong working knowledge of relevant cost analysis systems, processes, and tools, including the ability to assist colleagues and troubleshoot issues.
