Purpose of Position: The Safety Manager provides strategic leadership for transportation safety, regulatory compliance, and fleet equipment operations. In partnership with transportation and operations leadership, this role drives safety initiatives, oversees compliance and fleet programs, leads investigations and audits, and leverages performance metrics to reduce risk, improve operational effectiveness, and support safe and compliant transportation operations. Accountabilities:
- Provide leadership and oversight to the Safety Team, establishing performance expectations, developing talent, and ensuring effective execution of the organization's transportation safety and compliance strategy.
- Provide leadership and oversight to the Equipment Team, ensuring effective fleet asset management, preventive maintenance compliance, equipment utilization, vendor coordination, and overall fleet readiness to support safe and efficient operations
- Lead transportation safety and DOT compliance programs in accordance with FMCSA regulations and company policies.
- Oversee driver qualification, onboarding, compliance monitoring, and safety training programs to ensure regulatory compliance and support safe driving behaviors.
- Administer the DOT Random Drug and Alcohol Testing Program and related compliance requirements.
- Lead DOT audits, inspections, and safety reviews while maintaining compliance records and documentation to ensure audit readiness and risk mitigation.
- Direct accident reporting, investigations, claims management, and corrective action processes to reduce risk and improve fleet safety performance.
- Establish, analyze, and report key safety and compliance metrics, including CSA performance, accident trends, inspection results, and Hours of Service compliance.
- Develop and implement corrective action and disciplinary programs related to safety and compliance violations.
- Develop safety initiatives and action plans that strengthen safety culture and improve fleet performance.
- Monitor contracted carrier and transportation vendor compliance with company safety standards.
- Partner with operational leadership to promote a culture of safety, reduce operational risk, and drive continuous improvement across the transportation network.
Minimum Skills Required:
- Knowledge of DOT regulations, FMCSRs, ELDs, Hours of Service requirements, and DOT drug and alcohol testing programs.
- Experience managing transportation safety, regulatory compliance, and fleet equipment programs.
- Experience conducting root cause investigations, incident management, insurance claims administration, and corrective action planning.
- Knowledge of fleet maintenance practices, equipment lifecycle management, asset utilization, maintenance compliance, and operational readiness.
- Experience leading cross-functional safety, compliance, and fleet operations teams.
- Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, drive continuous improvement, and influence performance across teams.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in Safety, Business, Transportation, Logistics, Fleet Management, or a related field.
- 3+ years of transportation safety, DOT compliance, fleet equipment management, or transportation operations experience.
- Experience with private fleet operations, fleet equipment oversight, DOT audits, accident investigations, and maintenance compliance.
- Experience managing fleet assets, equipment lifecycle programs, preventive maintenance initiatives, and vendor relationships.
- Transportation, distribution, logistics, or fleet-based operations experience.
- Professional safety certification preferred.
