Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Job Summary:
The Animal Technician is responsible for the daily care, monitoring, and husbandry of laboratory animals in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and established procedures. The position supports laboratory animal research operations by maintaining animal housing areas, equipment, records, and ensuring the proper care and use of animals.

Work Arrangement:

  • Monday-Friday
  • 7:00 AM-4:00 PM; schedule can be flexible while maintaining consistent 8-hour workdays with a 30-minute lunch
  • Full medicals are required for all onsite or hybrid candidates.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals, including rodents and other species.
  • Change cages and racks and provide food and water according to established procedures.
  • Maintain animal housing areas and equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Perform animal husbandry, sanitation, cleaning, and disinfection activities.
  • Monitor and communicate animal health concerns to veterinary staff, researchers, and compliance personnel.
  • Maintain accurate records, including per-diem records, animal health surveillance, feed logs, temperature/humidity charts, and animal receipt and disposition logs.
  • Use cage washers for cleaning and autoclaves for sterilization of cages and equipment.
  • Perform required technical procedures within the scope of the position to support research activities.
  • Identify problems, take appropriate corrective action, and report issues promptly.
  • Scan cage barcodes, synchronize PDAs, submit Health Surveillance Reports electronically, complete online training, and use email and other computer systems for work-related activities.
  • Follow all applicable work rules, safety procedures, and animal facility requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation/equipment operations experience.
  • High school diploma/GED with one of the following:
    • Training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification of AALAS and one year of animal care experience; or
    • Two years of animal care experience with an appropriate animal species; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • General knowledge of feeding, caging, and space requirements for multiple species of laboratory animals used in biomedical research.
  • Knowledge of animal health monitoring and the ability to recognize and report animal health concerns.
  • Knowledge of disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents.
  • General knowledge of applicable federal and other regulatory requirements.
  • Basic computer and email skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and legible records.
  • Ability to follow established safety and facility procedures.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and work on hard surfaces for extended periods, up to 7 hours per day.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including protective clothing, safety glasses, safety shoes, gloves, face masks, and respirators when assigned.
  • Ability to safely push, pull, move, and lift loads weighing up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year of laboratory animal care experience.
  • AALAS certification preferred.
  • Experience working with laboratory animals in a biomedical research environment.
  • Experience operating cage washers and autoclaves.
