Special Note
This is a full-time, overtime eligible position in Professional and Continuing Education on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College. This position is an "at-will" appointment, exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules.
Position Purpose
This position coordinates and implements academic and career advising services for Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) students, including adult learners pursuing degree completion or certificates and traditional-age students enrolled in PaCE courses. Serving as a primary point of contact from onboarding through graduation, the position provides support related to admissions, financial aid access, academic planning, career development, registration, and student success.
The incumbent collaborates closely with the PaCE recruitment team to support prospective students, align recruitment messaging, and contribute to outreach events and communications. The position serves as a campus resource on adult learner success, providing expertise and leadership to faculty and staff to enhance retention, persistence, student achievement, and career success. As a member of cross-divisional leadership teams, the position contributes to the development of services, policies, and initiatives that support holistic career and academic advising.
Nature and Scope
This position reports to the Dean of Professional and Continuing Education. The position plays a central role in developing and implementing academic and career advising strategies for the School of Professional and Continuing Education and works closely with the office of Academic and Career Advising.
The position serves as the lead career and academic advisor for PaCE students, including advising, tracking, and reported as needed for certificate programs, Prior Learning from Experience ( PLE), degree-completion pathways, WorkSource, and the Department of Defense Tuition Assistance Program. Working closely with the Academic and Career Advising team, the incumbent collaborates regularly with faculty and staff across the Olympia and Tacoma campuses and represents career-connected, part-time, and online student advising perspectives in planning and development initiatives.
Essential Functions
Academic and Career Advising, Retention, and Student Success

  • Provide academic and career advising to students and alumni through appointments, drop-in services, telephone, email, workshops, and classroom presentations, including guidance on curriculum planning, career exploration, graduate school preparation, job search strategies, and related resources.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive knowledge of academic programs, with particular emphasis on certificates, degree-completion pathways, and alternative credit opportunities.
  • Conduct academic needs assessments and utilize career development tools, including interest, skills, and personality assessments.
  • Serve as an informational resource and academic advisor for degree planning and course-completion tracking as needed for the Department of Defense Tuition Assistance Program, PLE, and Washington State Employment Security Department programs.
  • Collaboratively maintain and update advising resources, including websites, newsletters, and other student communications.
  • Develop and deliver advising outreach, coaching communication, and program activities designed to support adult learners, part-time students, and online learners.
  • Maintain outreach efforts for students who withdraw or take a leave of absence and assist in addressing barriers to persistence and re-enrollment.


Collaboration and Partnership Development

  • Collaborate with Academic and Career Advising, PaCE staff, faculty, and campus partners to implement holistic advising strategies that support adult learners from admission through graduation and beyond.
  • Partner with the Office of Experiential Learning to connect students with internships, employment opportunities, and other high-impact learning experiences.
  • Build and maintain relationships with faculty and campus partners to enhance student support and promote awareness of academic and career resources.

Program Assessment and Strategic Planning

  • Support program evaluation and assessment activities, including data collection, reporting, annual reviews, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Develop and manage proactive advising processes for new students.
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives focused on career and academic advising.
  • Monitor student employment, internship, and workforce trends, as well as relevant institutional, state, and federal policies.
  • Assist in establishing and achieving student retention and persistence goals through the analysis and application of data.

Training, Outreach, and Events

  • Provide training, consultation, and resources to faculty and staff to strengthen career and academic advising practices for adult learners.
  • Plan and coordinate advising workshops, events, and programs for PaCE students.
  • Support recruitment efforts through participation in open houses, information sessions, and other admissions-related events.
  • Represent PaCE and The Evergreen State College at conferences, meetings, and community events as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of academic advising, career development theory, and student success practices, particularly as they relate to diverse student populations.
  • Ability to provide effective academic and career advising, including support for career transitions, educational planning, and professional development.
  • Understanding of the social, cultural, and economic factors that influence success in higher education for adult learners.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to interpret and communicate complex policies and procedures to a variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge of career exploration resources, labor market trends, job search strategies, and graduate and professional school pathways.
  • Familiarity with employer-sponsored education programs, third-party tuition assistance, and workforce development partnerships.
  • Familiarity with alternative methods of earning academic credit, including Prior Learning from Experience, internships, and related experiential learning opportunities.
  • Ability to analyze and apply data to planning, assessment, and student support initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to analyze problems, needs, and opportunities, and initiate creative solutions.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships and work effectively with students, faculty, staff, employers, and community partners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to display a high degree of diplomacy, professionalism, and conflict management skill.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects, meet deadlines, and maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, web content management systems, databases and related technology tools.
  • Ability to work primarily in-person during daytime, early evening, and occasional weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a related field.
  • Three years of professional experience working effectively with diverse populations in higher education student services, such as academic advising, career services, adult education, multicultural student support, or related areas.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience advising students enrolled in online, professional, continuing, degree-completion, or workforce training programs.
  • Experience working with adult, returning, or nontraditional students.
  • Experience using data to support student retention, persistence, and program improvement initiatives.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information.
