Data Center Technician I
Fredericksburg, VA
Schedule/Shift: Monday-Friday, 8-hour shifts
Pay: $25.00-$26.00 per hour

Job Summary

The Data Center Technician I supports the installation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and decommissioning of network and cabling infrastructure within data center environments. This position works with copper and fiber cabling, network equipment, testing equipment, and structured cabling systems while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, documentation, and site cleanliness. The technician reads floor plans and technical documentation, performs cable terminations and testing, and collaborates with team members and stakeholders to complete projects efficiently. Travel between data center locations in Fredericksburg, Mineral, and Stafford, Virginia, is required as needed.

Job Responsibilities




  • Install and decommission network equipment, structured cabling, and related data center infrastructure.



  • Install and pull various types of low-voltage cable.



  • Perform field terminations, cable dressing, labeling, and cable management.



  • Install ladder racking and seismic bracing above and below raised floors.



  • Client out and organize MDF and IDF closets according to project requirements.



  • Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, design documents, and redline documentation.



  • Perform copper and fiber cable testing and troubleshooting.



  • Dress and furcate fiber trunks in preparation for splicing.



  • Perform fusion splicing, including ribbon and single-fiber OSP/ISP applications.



  • Operate DSX-5000 and OTDR testing equipment.



  • Program cable testers and download results using LinkWare or LinkWare Live.



  • Review, verify, save, and submit cable test results as required.



  • Create and apply mass labels according to port maps and project specifications.



  • Identify and differentiate live cabling from cabling designated for decommissioning.



  • Perform service swaps involving live networking devices.



  • Use applicable database systems and scanners to support data center operations.



  • Maintain accurate and organized project and service documentation.



  • Provide clear project progress updates to appropriate stakeholders.



  • Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to resolve project obstacles.



  • Maintain data center cleanliness and demonstrate quality workmanship.



  • Follow established production, safety, quality, code, and industry standards.



  • Identify opportunities to improve repeatable processes and project execution.



  • Follow daily work direction from designated technical leads and operational leadership.




Job Requirements




  • Previous experience working with structured cabling, low-voltage systems, telecommunications, or data center infrastructure preferred.



  • OSHA 10 certification required.



  • Working knowledge of basic telecommunications hand tools.



  • Ability to work effectively in an active data center environment.



  • Understanding of wiring schemes, structured cabling, and cable testing procedures.



  • Knowledge of copper and fiber cabling, testing, and troubleshooting.



  • Ability to perform cable terminations, dressing, labeling, and cable management.



  • Familiarity with fusion splicing, including ribbon and single-fiber OSP/ISP applications.



  • Experience using DSX-5000 and OTDR testing equipment preferred.



  • Familiarity with LinkWare or LinkWare Live preferred.



  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, floor plans, port maps, and technical design documents.



  • Understanding of workplace and job-site safety requirements.



  • Strong customer service and communication skills.



  • Ability to maintain accurate and organized documentation.



  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written, visual, and listening methods.



  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate hand tools, testing equipment, computers, and other technical instruments.



  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.



  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.



  • Ability to pull cable, climb ladders, and work safely on raised platforms.
