Lead Security / Low-Voltage Technician
Chicago, IL (Remote/Field-Based)
Schedule/Shift: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM
Pay: $80,000-$100,000 per year
Position Type: Direct Hire

Job Summary
The Lead Security / Low-Voltage Technician is responsible for independently executing security and low-voltage installations, service calls, troubleshooting, and project closeout throughout the Chicago suburbs. This position focuses on access control, CCTV/IP surveillance, structured cabling, and fiber systems, with an emphasis on strong field troubleshooting and hands-on CCTV configuration. The technician will take ownership of assigned work, make sound field decisions, coordinate with engineering and customer IT resources as needed, and lead or mentor other technicians. Primary access control programming is handled by engineering; this role requires installation expertise, light configuration, basic IP addressing, and effective coordination with technical support resources.

Job Responsibilities




  • Install and troubleshoot access control panels, readers, door contacts, request-to-exit devices, locking hardware, and power supplies.



  • Run, terminate, label, and test access control and low-voltage wiring.



  • Diagnose wiring, power, hardware, network connectivity, and equipment issues.



  • Perform light access control configuration, including assigning IP addresses to boards and verifying connectivity.



  • Coordinate with engineering resources for access control programming, system testing, and advanced technical support.



  • Verify proper door operation and identify outstanding issues before completing assignments.



  • Install, aim, focus, configure, and troubleshoot IP surveillance cameras.



  • Work with network video recorders and video management systems to verify camera views, recording, and playback.



  • Configure camera IP addresses and troubleshoot connectivity, PoE, and recording issues.



  • Coordinate with engineering or customer IT resources when additional network or system support is required.



  • Install, terminate, label, test, and troubleshoot structured cabling and fiber.



  • Maintain organized cable pathways, racks, and equipment installations.



  • Read and interpret prints, wiring diagrams, scopes of work, and project documentation.



  • Review job requirements and arrive prepared with the appropriate tools, materials, and project information.



  • Plan and execute daily field assignments through completion with minimal supervision.



  • Troubleshoot issues systematically and communicate findings and recommended corrective actions.



  • Identify material shortages, site constraints, scope discrepancies, and additional work requirements early in the project.



  • Communicate project progress, delays, unresolved issues, and return-visit requirements to appropriate stakeholders.



  • Escalate issues requiring engineering support or approval with clear supporting information.



  • Lead technicians when assigned and provide clear direction regarding daily work activities.



  • Review workmanship, installation quality, testing, and project completion.



  • Mentor less-experienced technicians in installation and troubleshooting practices.



  • Communicate professionally with customers, site contacts, technical resources, and other trades.



  • Maintain safe work practices and an organized jobsite.



  • Complete accurate service notes, labor records, photographs, and equipment documentation.



  • Document system testing, relevant IP information, configuration changes, and unresolved issues.



  • Confirm completed work meets the approved scope and clearly communicate outstanding follow-up requirements.




Job Requirements




  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant security or low-voltage field experience; 10+ years of relevant experience preferred.



  • Previous experience leading, mentoring, or directing technicians in the field.



  • Strong hands-on access control installation and troubleshooting experience.



  • Ability to perform light access control configuration and basic IP addressing.



  • Strong CCTV/IP surveillance installation, configuration, and troubleshooting skills.



  • Experience installing and servicing IP camera systems; experience with Hanwha and Axis equipment is beneficial.



  • Experience with network video recorders and video management systems.



  • Working knowledge of IP networking, connectivity troubleshooting, and PoE as related to security systems.



  • Structured cabling installation, termination, labeling, testing, and troubleshooting experience.



  • Fiber installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting experience.



  • Ability to read and interpret prints, wiring diagrams, scopes of work, and project documentation.



  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot independently and take ownership of field assignments.



  • Strong customer communication and documentation skills.



  • Ability to work effectively with engineering and customer IT teams.



  • Ability to reliably support field assignments throughout the Chicago suburbs.



  • Ability to maintain safe, organized, and professional jobsites.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Field assignments are primarily located throughout the Illinois suburbs surrounding Chicago.



  • Regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM.



  • Occasional travel of up to approximately 20% is a plus but is not the primary focus of the position.
