The Division of Strategic Communications bears primary responsibility for maintaining and safeguarding the university's public image through strategic marketing, public relations, media relations, news services, publications, executive messaging, digital communications and social media, and crisis and emergency communications. The division establishes standards for articulating the university's mission, vision, core values, strategic goals, and visual identity; promotes
UNCSA performances, events, philanthropic opportunities, and the accomplishments of its students, alumni, faculty, and staff; and maintains the university's principal external communications channels, including the website and institutional social media. Strategic Communications also provides communications counsel, insight, and planning support to the Chancellor and other senior leaders. |
| Primary Description of Work |
The Social Media Manager reports to the Director of Digital Experience & Engagement and manages the day-to-day execution of UNCSA's institutional social media presence. The position creates, curates, schedules, publishes, and monitors timely content across the university's principal social channels; manages social media calendars and campaign execution; engages audiences and campus partners; and helps ensure that social communications advance institutional goals for reputation, recruitment, performances, advancement, student success, and community connection.
The manager produces social-first captions and graphic, photographic, and short-form video content; identifies and coordinates content opportunities across the university; supports decentralized social accounts and the Content Creator Program; monitors conversations, sentiment, trends, and emerging issues; and uses analytics to improve reach, engagement, and meaningful audience response. The position applies sound editorial judgment, accessibility and rights-management practices.

The Social Media Manager independently makes routine decisions concerning scheduling, channel execution, platform-appropriate copy and creative treatment, community engagement, and optimization within approved strategy, brand standards, policies, campaign plans, and crisis protocols. Matters involving institutional positioning, significant reputational risk, legal or privacy concerns, executive communications, sensitive student matters, major policy interpretation, or unapproved spending are escalated to the Director of Digital Experience & Engagement or the appropriate university authority. |
| Minimum Qualifications |
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
| Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience managing social media for higher education, the arts, a public institution, or another complex organization with multiple audiences and stakeholders.
- Experience using Sprout Social for publishing, social listening, community management, analytics, and reporting, or experience with a comparable enterprise platform and the ability to become proficient in Sprout Social quickly.
- Experience covering live events, performances, rehearsals, or campus activities and producing timely short-form video and photography in a fast-moving environment.
- Experience supporting ambassador, student creator, influencer, or user-generated-content programs.
- Experience supporting urgent, issues-management, or crisis communications on social media.
- Experience using generative-AI or AI-enabled communications tools responsibly for ideation, adaptation, accessibility, workflow support, or analysis while maintaining human creative direction and editorial judgment.

- Strong knowledge of current social platforms, content formats, audience behaviors, platform conventions, trends, community-management practices, and channel-specific best practices.
- Excellent promotional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to adapt voice and format for different audiences and platforms.
- Strong social-first photography and visual-storytelling skills, including composition, exposure, lighting, image selection, basic editing, and delivery for mobile and platform-specific use.
- Strong short-form video production skills, including concept development, shot planning, framing, lighting, audio capture, mobile or lightweight-camera operation, editing, pacing, captioning, and versioning for different social platforms.
- Ability to apply sound judgment and discretion when handling sensitive, confidential or time-critical information and communicating on behalf of the university.
- Ability to recognize timely opportunities, understand cultural context, and exercise sound judgment about when and how an institution should participate in online conversations.
- Ability to interpret social analytics and qualitative audience signals, identify meaningful patterns, and turn findings into practical content and engagement improvements.
- Working knowledge of accessibility, copyright, music and image rights, releases, attribution, privacy, records, and account-security considerations for institutional social media.
- Ability to manage multiple calendars, deadlines, events, campaigns, and stakeholder requests while remaining responsive to unplanned opportunities and urgent needs.
- Ability to collaborate with students, faculty, staff, leaders, and creative professionals and to receive and apply editorial and strategic direction.
