What to Expect
This position will be embedded within a claims operations center and primarily assist the Claims Department with evaluating and resolving complex litigated and non-litigated claims, and advise on coverage issues. This position will also facilitate the management of litigated maters handled by outside counsel, and may also be called upon to occasionally handle non-complex litigation prior to referral to outside counsel. Candidates must have a strong litigation background, be execution-oriented, have excellent analytical skills, and be able to operate independently and at high volume.
What You'll Do
- Draft reservations of rights and denial letters for complex claims, and assist with compliance with preservation demands, subpoenas and other discovery requests
- Keep abreast of legal trends and regulatory developments to identify the potential impact to Tesla's business
- Conduct legal research for internal business clients and provide clear, concise, accurate and actionable legal advice
- Strategize on processes and procedures for effective, consistent handling of matters and assist with the development and delivery of training programs
- Collaborate with outside counsel to ensure consistent and effective handling of litigated matters
- Play a key role in negotiating resolution of complex litigated and non-litigated matters, including high-exposure claims, policy limit demands, and matters alleging insurance "bad faith"
- Take remote EUOs, handle some non-complex UM arbitrations/litigation and prepare witnesses for deposition
What You'll Bring
- Admitted to practice law in CA and/or experience handling CA litigation strongly preferred. Admission and experience handling litigation in TX, AZ, NV and FL also preferred
- 7+ years of experience at a leading law firm and/or in-house legal department with significant experience handling insurance litigation and coverage issues
- Experience with AVs, TNCs and commercial auto insurance a plus
- Solid case evaluation abilities, critical thinking skills and the ability to translate complex legal issues into clear and simple advice
- Able to learn on the job and be comfortable in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment where demands and priorities change rapidly
- Must be detail oriented with outstanding organizational skills and the proven ability to multi-task while maintaining high-quality and performance
- Must be results-driven, have a strong sense of urgency, be business-minded, and able to effectively interact with, influence and collaborate with other members of the organization
