Job Description

Located in Kent Washington, Protective Coatings Inc. is a leading provider of full service finishing for the aerospace, electronics and medical industries in both commercial and defense applications. Services include but are not limited to non-destructive testing such as fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle inspection and a wide variety of surface enhancement processes such as shot peening and abrasive blasting, passivation, cadmium and nickel zinc plating, chromic, sulfuric and boric sulfuric acid anodizing and the application of chromate conversion coating on ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. Organic coating includes the application and testing of multiple resin systems such as epoxies, phenolics, polyurethanes, polyesters, elastomerics, intumescents, lacquers, alkyds, acrylics, dry-film lubricants and Teflon.

Founded in 1976, Protective Coatings Inc. was later acquired by Precision Castparts in 2012, and became part of the Aerostructures Division.

Position Summary:

Selected candidates for a Paint Masker Level 4 will perform a variety of complex masking duties which require meticulous attention to detail, covering certain features of a part (such as electrical bonding areas, footprints, character masking, etc.) to protect those surfaces from coating or processing applications. This will require from a candidate knowledge of dimensional control through drawing tolerance requirements and basic mathematical skills in order to accomplish such tasks. A Level 4 Paint Masker will mainly provide masking support for the Paint department, however on occasion the masker may support the Blast, Shot Peen and Plating departments given the complexity of the job. Level 4 Paint Maskers will require experience in reading advanced aerospace blueprints, and will be expected to set up and provide instruction of masking samples of orders based on blueprint interpretation and customer requirements. A Level 4 Masker must have some basic photography and computer skills in order to create technique sheets, and will work with a Die-Cut machine using a simple CAD program to provide precut mask materials to employees. The Level 4 Paint Masker will perform masking activities by reviewing the shop traveler to determine the operational requirements and verification of completion of previous operations. The Level 4 Masker's responsibilities will include maintaining a clean and organized work area, as well as adherence to organization safety rules and regulations. Candidates of this position must have strong leadership qualities, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a team environment. The work environment is fast paced in order to meet the daily productions goals while maintaining a focus on industry and organizational quality standards.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Understand, adhere, and demonstrate to the company's commitment to quality and
  • Maintaining regular and punctual attendance according to shift-times or a pre-arranged work schedule.
  • Follow all policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Wears and maintains proper personal equipment (PPE).
  • Interpret masking and finish processing requirements through reading of aerospace blueprints and customer contract notations.
  • Provide set up samples of masked parts and instruction to lower level employees.
  • Design and create masking templates and tools to aid in masking.
  • Design and create specific pre-cut, dimensionally controlled masking using a basic CAD program and Die-Cut Machine.
  • Perform complex masking jobs that require meticulous detail and attention to meet blueprint dimensional requirements.
  • Measure and verify features of parts having critical dimensional tolerances utilizing calipers, scales, or rulers.
  • Requisitions masking and other materials required to meet production goals.
  • Proper use of masking tools such as razor blades, wire cutters, insertion tools, plier, etc.
  • Read the work order instructions from traveler or other job related documents and process the jobs exactly as instructed.
  • Working with and around solvent cleaners and paint materials such as acetone, alcohol, MEK, paint, etc.
  • Reviews work orders, purchase orders, relative engineering drawings and process specifications to perform initial setup of all masking.
  • Confers with Quality and Engineering Departments to facilitate answers to ambiguous drawing and/or purchase order requirements.
  • Work independently or as a team member as required by job.
  • Working in fast paced environment to meet Production and Quality goals.
  • Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignment.
  • Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Must be able to mentor and train other employees.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of masking materials, and the ability to use materials appropriately.
  • Ability to interpret advanced aerospace blueprint drawings (identifying flagnotes, rotation views, dimensions and tolerances, etc.).
  • Ability to use and train others to use measuring equipment such as calipers, scales, rulers.
  • Ability to train other employees in masking techniques.
  • Observational skills -ability to identify and fix masking issues.
  • Basic knowledge of Flexi Expert Cloud software (Used to create precut masking material with Die-Cut Machine).
  • Ability to take photos and create technique sheets by using basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to perform basic in process inspection duties as required.
    • Must be able to life up to 35 pounds

    Required Experience:

    • 5 year minimum.

    Level of Education:

    • High School Diploma or GED

    Shift:

    • Monday through Friday from 6am to 2:30pm

    For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $20 to $33 US Dollar (USD) Hourly based on a variety of factors. For informational purposes only, this role is eligible to participate in the Company's Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, paid out at the quarterly bonus factor of 1X the Company's bonus multiple, based on the Company's performance in the applicable quarter . Employees will receive 120 hours paid time off every year. Employees will also receive 10 paid holidays. Employees (and their families) are eligible to participate in the company's medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. Employees are eligible to enroll in the Company's 401(k) plan.
