In the role of HIM Manager of Inpatient Coding, you will be responsible for implementing effective strategies and enhancing workflows and performance.

About The Position



  • Oversee the inpatient coding staff and daily operations, including work assignments, schedules, time-off requests, timecard review and approval, and other administrative responsibilities.
  • Accepts responsibility and accountability for the operations and performance of assigned functional areas.
  • Meets with the inpatient coding team regularly to provide departmental and organizational updates and communicate changes in workflows, coding guidance, policies, and expectations.
  • Conducts monthly one-on-one meetings with each coder to review performance, provide feedback, discuss development needs, and address questions or concerns.
  • Audits inpatient coding work for all inpatient coders each month and communicates findings, education, and required corrective actions.
  • Attends weekly client calls and escalates issues to the Director of Coding as appropriate.
  • Monitors coder productivity, quality, and compliance with departmental standards and implement workflow or operational improvements as needed.
  • Develops, administers, and monitors performance improvement plans and other corrective actions in coordination with the Director of Coding and Talent Operations.
  • Manage recruitment, interviewing, hiring, disciplinary actions, and termination processes for inpatient coding staff in accordance with company policies and in coordination with the Director of Coding and Talent Operations.
  • Maintains clear written and verbal communication with the Director of Coding regarding staffing, performance, workflow, and operational issues.
  • Partners with and manages onshore and offshore coding teams, including onboarding, training coordination, workflow integration, productivity and quality monitoring, communication of coding guidance and expectations, and escalation of performance or operational concerns.
  • Provides staff training, coaching, feedback, and corrective action as needed.
  • Codes inpatient accounts as needed to maintain discharged not final coded (DNFC) performance within established metrics, provide coverage during coder absences, and address workload demands.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff, vendors, clients, and other stakeholders by providing information or direction and facilitating issue resolution.
  • Assists with special projects and performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Coding.



Minimum Requirements:



  • CPC or CCS required
  • 6-months experience in a HIM Supervisor/Auditor role required
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in Inpatient coding and auditing
  • At least 3-years experience in an acute care facility with experience directly related to HIM
  • 3-years experience in hospital based electronic medical record systems required
  • Previous management/supervisor experience preferred
  • Demonstrates a high level of personal and professional accountability and responsibility
  • Ability to problem solve and apply critical thinking skills
