Job Description

What is the opportunity?

RBC is seeking a Vice President, US Tax to lead its US tax function from our Jersey City headquarters at a critical growth inflection point for RBC in the United States. This senior leadership role carries dual accountability: driving operational excellence across compliance and reporting while serving as a strategic tax adviser to RBC's growing US businesses. As the ultimate decision maker for all US tax matters, you will have significant autonomy and genuine scope to shape how the function operates, supported by executive oversight from the Global Head of Tax in Toronto. This is a high-visibility opportunity to lead a transformation agenda while supporting RBC's continued US expansion as the organization's second-largest market globally.

What will you do?

  • Leadership and Strategic Tax Advisory
    • Lead and mentor a highly skilled US tax team, implementing best practices and fostering a culture that balances autonomy with accountability
    • Partner strategically with RBC's US businesses-including Capital Markets, Wealth Management, City National Bank, and other platforms-to provide comprehensive tax support, risk management counsel, and advice that enables business growth and new product/business development
    • Drive development and implementation of US tax planning initiatives aligned with RBC's global tax strategies, optimizing shareholder value while ensuring full compliance with tax laws
    • Provide specialized tax counsel for M&A activity, corporate reorganizations, and financings related to US operations
    • Serve as a thought leader and fresh voice for the function: identify opportunities to enhance operational effectiveness, collaborate with the government relations team, and represent RBC at tax-related organizations to advocate effectively for RBC's US tax interests
  • Compliance, Reporting, and Risk Management
    • Oversee all US tax compliance obligations across federal, state, and local jurisdictions (SALT), ensuring accurate and timely filing of all US tax returns, audit management, and effective tax risk management for all US businesses and activities
    • Drive compliance, advisory, risk management, and governance efficiencies through strategic implementation of AI and automation technologies within a robust control environment
    • Lead the streamlining and integration of all US tax activities to eliminate redundancies and improve effectiveness
    • Explore and implement opportunities for greater integration and efficiency across the US compliance function and with the Canadian tax team

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have:

  • J.D. and/or CPA credential with demonstrated financial institution expertise and strong tax technical and accounting skills
  • Solid command of US federal, state, and local tax with proven experience in capital markets or financial services
  • Familiarity with the tax complexities of large, multi-entity financial institutions operating across multiple US jurisdictions
  • Proven track record leading teams of highly skilled professionals, balancing autonomy with appropriate support and accountability
  • Collaborative leadership style with demonstrated ability to drive engagement and accountability without micromanagement
  • Comfort as the ultimate decision-maker: ability to own outcomes confidently and escalate appropriately to senior leadership
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with business leaders and comfort engaging with senior stakeholders across the enterprise
  • Genuine appetite to support responsible revenue growth and business expansion

Nice to have:

  • Experience managing or participating in integrations (M&A or operational mergers)
  • Familiarity with AI and automation opportunities in tax compliance and advisory functions
  • Background in governance, risk management, and control framework design
  • Experience representing organizations in tax policy advocacy or industry organizations
  • Knowledge of multi-jurisdictional tax planning strategies at large financial institutions
  • Track record of implementing process improvements or organizational transformations
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel to New York City, Los Angeles, and Toronto as needed to support the business

What's in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team
  • Opportunities to do challenging work
