Department: WCAS History

Assistant Professor, Modern Japanese History

The Department of History at Northwestern University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in the history of modern Japan. We particularly encourage applications from historians who consider connections across and within the Japanese empire, the process of decolonization and its aftermath, and the global or regional contexts of Japanese history. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in History or an adjacent field by the start date of the appointment. The successful candidate will teach four courses annually over the course of three academic quarters, advise graduate students, and contribute to a vibrant interdisciplinary community of Asianists both in and beyond the History Department. This is a full-time position starting September 1, 2027.

A letter of application, CV, writing sample (no longer than an article or dissertation/book chapter), and three letters of recommendation (sent separately) must be submitted electronically via the link on our departmental website at http://www.history.northwestern.edu/ by October 30, 2026.

Please address any questions regarding this position to Annerys Cano at annerys.cano@northwestern.edu.
