Job Purpose:

The Production Manager leads and manages production and operations from production planning through shipment, with responsibility for materials and inventory management, shipping and warehouse operations, production floor performance, and multi-shift (24/6) execution. This role combines hands-on manufacturing and materials management expertise with leadership of cross-functional activities to ensure on-time delivery, acceptable inventory levels, cost control, and continuous improvement across manufacturing operations.

Job Description and Responsibilities:

  • Operations Leadership: Lead day-to-day production operations across assigned areas, ensuring production, quality, safety, schedule adherence, and cost objectives are met. Manage multi-shift operations (24/6) including shift handovers, staffing, and performance monitoring.
  • Production Planning & Execution: Establish daily, weekly, and monthly production build plans based on material availability, production capacity, priorities, and customer commitments. Prioritize production schedules using product introduction timelines, equipment efficiency, and materials supply. Monitor execution, review progress against the plan, and make course corrections to meet Estimated Completion Dates (ECDs). Provide weekly schedule updates to internal stakeholders and customers.
  • Materials & Inventory Management: Own material flow and availability for the production floor. Maintain inventory at acceptable levels, review and plan requirements, and coordinate with purchasing/stockroom to ensure kits and parts are delivered on time. Coordinate with finance/accounting to manage inventory carrying costs and reconcile inventory metrics.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Work closely with Planning, Purchasing, Stockroom, Test, Maintenance, Program Management, and Finance to coordinate resources, schedule critical equipment (e.g., vibration test stands, test chambers), resolve material or capacity constraints, and support new order/contract reviews.
  • Staffing, Training & Performance Management: Lead manpower planning and staffing decisions in partnership with HR. Oversee hiring, training, and professional development for production teams and supervisors. Proactively manage capacity by identifying constraints and authorizing necessary staffing adjustments, shift assignments, and overtime within approved budget guidelines.
  • Continuous Improvement & Process Control: Implement corporate process requirements and Lean/Six Sigma improvements to improve yields, reduce cycle time, and raise manufacturing expertise. Review manufacturing processes, perform gap analyses, document work instructions, and lead process development efforts.
  • Quality, Compliance & Standards: Ensure manufacturing activities conform with quality and regulatory requirements including ISO9001, AS9100, and ITAR where applicable.
  • Metrics, Reporting & Budget: Monitor and report operational results and key performance indicators (on-time delivery, yield, inventory turns, capacity utilization, labor productivity). Contribute to budget planning, make recommendations for capital expenditures, and manage direct/indirect labor and overtime within assigned areas.
  • Set production schedules and ECDs for backlog orders in coordination with planning and program management.
  • Recommend capital expenditures and equipment investments; participate in contract reviews for new orders as required.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum 10 years of direct, hands-on manufacturing, production supervision, process engineering, or materials management experience, preferably in the high-tech or PCBA manufacturing environment with exposure to NPI/prototype builds in mixed volume environments.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong background in SMT processes (reflow, wave soldering), through-hole and press-fit technology, process development, and manufacturing equipment. Experience with ERP/MRP systems such as Oracle or SAP and familiarity supporting materials from an IT/Oracle perspective.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability leading fast-paced, multi-faceted teams; experience with staffing, coaching, performance management, and workforce development.
  • Process & Data Skills: Ability to use Lean/Six Sigma methods and statistical tools for process improvement; project management experience. Familiarity with ISO9001/ISO13485 /AS9100 and ITAR compliance requirements.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in manufacturing/industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electronics, or related discipline preferred. Associate degree (AS) or Electronics Technician certification acceptable with equivalent experience.
  • Language: Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Green Belt (Six Sigma) certification or equivalent continuous improvement certification.
  • Experience with high/low mix production environments and contract manufacturing (CM) operations.
  • Proven experience managing multi-shift operations and coordinating critical test resources (vibration, test chambers, environmental testing).

Working Conditions and Other Requirements

  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to production floor conditions. Ability to support multiple shifts and occasionally work extended hours to meet production commitments.
  • Must be able to review and analyze production and inventory data and produce reports for leadership and customers.
