Position Summary
This position will conduct laboratory research and provide technical laboratory support for the department's black fly rearing efforts. This position will also provide support in the development of training materials and organization for a new pre-professional certificate program focused on medical entomology and vector-borne diseases, and will help with the inventory and organization of laboratory materials for the Entomology Department.

This position has a limited-term appointment that is expected to end after 2 years (August 2028) after the start date. The position may be extended beyond the initial term, pending a written revised appointment letter, contingent upon continued funding.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Experience in conducting insect surveillance in a collaborative setting, and in collecting and managing field data
  • Experience with insect husbandry and colony management
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Microscopy experience
  • Understanding of sterile techniques
  • Proficiency in Excel, Adobe
  • Track record of mentoring students and laboratory personnel in specialized lab and field techniques
  • Experience in organizing laboratory supplies and maintaining laboratory equipment

  • Sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Potential for overnight or weekend work according to the needs of the project

  • Coordinate training and outreach initiatives within the department, with a primary emphasis on advancing medical entomology education
  • Optimize teaching laboratory operations by developing and maintaining an organized, efficient system for supply inventory
  • Support development of the departmental pre-health certification program in medical entomology

  • Evaluate spatial repellent materials against black flies
  • Evaluate varying flow rates on larval growth and adult fitness
  • Evaluate the molecular and functional properties of larval black fly silk
