Job Title: Divisional Corps Assistant

FLSA Status: Full-time, 40 hours per week; Exempt

Reports to: Divisional Youth & Candidates Secretaries

Supervises: Volunteers as needed

Rate of Pay: Exempt

Term of Appointment: One-year appointment, subject to annual review and renewal based on divisional need, funding, and performance.

Function:

A Corps Assistant of The Salvation Army Alaska Division shall be a person of genuine and deepening Christian character, emotional, mental, and physical stamina, and a loyal participant in a ministry team who is able to work well with and cultivate trust among officers, employees, volunteers, and the people we serve. Agreement to, understanding of, and adherence to the doctrine, mission, and practice of The Salvation Army is required. This person must always represent The Salvation Army in a positive manner in personal conduct and appearance. The Corps Assistant should have experience with a variety of Salvation Army corps programs, youth ministry, outreach, and seasonal programming, and should be capable of making sound judgments with appropriate supervision. This position serves the division as assigned and must be able to adapt to different corps settings, schedules, and local ministry needs while supporting the direction of divisional leadership and the officers at the site being served.

Scope of Position:

The Corps Assistant works in close collaboration with the Divisional Youth & Candidates Secretaries to provide flexible ministry, program, seasonal, and administrative support to corps and divisional youth efforts across the Alaska Division. This position is not assigned permanently to a single corps, but is deployed as needed during high-demand seasons, staffing gaps, summer programming, holiday ministry, special events, outreach efforts, and transitional periods. The Corps Assistant reports directly to the Divisional Youth & Candidates Secretaries. When assigned to serve at a corps or program site, the Corps Assistant will coordinate day-to-day responsibilities with the Corps Officers or local site leadership while remaining accountable to divisional supervision. The position is intended to strengthen corps ministry by providing practical assistance, spiritual leadership, volunteer support, youth engagement, and dependable operational help where it is most needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary Responsibilities:

* Assist corps officers and divisional leadership with corps programs including, but not limited to, Sunday School, worship support, fellowship times, outreach activities, Bible studies, visitation, transportation, social services support, youth programs, and corps seasonal ministry needs.

* Provide flexible support to corps across the division during busy seasons, staff shortages, special campaigns, major events, summer ministry, and holiday efforts as assigned.

* Ensure Salvation Army youth programs are implemented and run efficiently, helping provide a variety of outreach, discipleship, and spiritual development opportunities that promote biblical character and growth.

* Assist with teen programs, troops, junior soldiers, corps cadets, junior church, day camps, VBS, seasonal events, and divisional youth activities as assigned.

* Strengthen relationships with children, youth, families, and corps constituents by connecting with neighborhoods, corps attendees, social services participants, and community partners.

* Recruit, train, develop, schedule, and encourage volunteers and local leaders for corps ministry programs, especially youth and seasonal programming, and be prepared to lead programs when volunteers are unavailable.

* Promote and recruit youth and families to participate in corps ministry, camps, divisional events, and outreach opportunities.

* Provide support for and, in most cases, attend divisional and territorial programs such as retreats, rallies, camps, congresses, training events, and other assigned gatherings.

* Actively participate in Christmas ministry as requested, including kettle support, volunteer coordination, driving, devotions, counting, toy and food distribution, Angel Tree, tag delivery, set-up, distribution events, and clean-up.

* Work a nonstandard work week in accordance with Salvation Army programming needs, including Sundays, evenings, camp schedules, divisional weekend events, travel, and occasional special Saturday events.

Administration:

* Coordinate and assist in the collection of statistics, reports, registrations, attendance information, and data entry as assigned.

* Assist with program communication, correspondence, calendars, rosters, directories, flyers, bulletins, and other ministry materials as needed.

* When involved in the collection of monies, work with corps or divisional administrative staff to ensure income is accounted for and reported in accordance with Salvation Army policy.

* Assist with invoices, supply coordination, purchases, and event logistics as requested.

* Assist as needed with audio, video, presentation, and computer-based equipment used in chapel, youth, and corps programs.

Vehicles and Transportation:

* Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid Alaska driver's license or be able to obtain one in accordance with Salvation Army policy.

* Must be able to drive Salvation Army vehicles as defined by The Salvation Army's driver safety standards and training requirements.

* Ability to pass TSA MVR review and required in-house driver safety processes.

* Coordinate transportation needs for programs, staff, volunteers, and participants as assigned.

* Help ensure vehicles used for ministry are fueled, reasonably clean, and reported for needed maintenance or repair through the appropriate supervisor.

Corps and Program Support:

* Make every effort to help keep corps and program spaces clean, orderly, welcoming, and in good repair, especially during and after programs or major events.

* Assist officers and divisional leadership with set-up, take-down, janitorial needs, light maintenance coordination, and special projects as requested.

* Be prepared to travel and temporarily serve in different corps, camps, or divisional ministry settings as assigned.

* Perform other related duties as assigned in support of divisional youth ministry, corps ministry, emergency response, public events, and seasonal operations.

Education/Experience:

* High school diploma or equivalent required.

* College coursework or degree in ministry, biblical studies, education, social services, youth work, or a related field is desired.

* Knowledge of Salvation Army programs, policies, procedures, and culture is desired.

* Minimum of one to two years of experience working with children, youth, families, church ministry, or community programs is required.

* Experience serving in Salvation Army corps ministry, camp ministry, or seasonal programs is strongly preferred.

Skills:

* Ability to teach Christian principles and assist in leading Salvation Army youth and corps programming.

* Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

* Self-starter, adaptable, outgoing, and energetic.

* Team player with the ability to work independently and take initiative.

* Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

* Ability to set priorities, exercise sound judgment, and accept responsibility willingly.

* Ability to recruit, lead, and encourage volunteers and employees.

* Ability to work professionally with sensitive and confidential information.

* Must complete and adhere to Protecting the Mission requirements and guidelines.

* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, email, and basic database or registration systems required; ability to learn new software with basic training.

Driving:

* This position requires the ability to drive.

* Minimum age to drive a Salvation Army vehicle is 21, in accordance with insurance provisions.

* A valid in-state driver's license is required.

* An MVR check will be processed in accordance with The Salvation Army's policies.

Background Check:

* Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required Salvation Army background screening, including any fingerprinting or state checks required for youth-serving positions.

* Continued employment is contingent upon recurring background checks processed in accordance with The Salvation Army's policies.

Physical Requirements:

* Ability to maneuver including walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.

* Ability to remain in a stationary position as needed.

* Ability to grasp, push, pull, and reach overhead.

* Ability to operate a telephone and other basic office equipment.

* Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

* Ability to access and produce information from a computer.

* Ability to understand written information.
