Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Medical Physicist.

In this role, the successful candidate Medical Physicist is a mid-level position who works independently and reports to the Director of Radiation Safety. A Medical Physicist is responsible for using and applying accepted principles and protocols of physics in a clinical setting to assure the correct quality, quantity and placement of radiation during the performance of a radiological procedure to protect the patient and other persons from harmful, excessive or misapplied radiation.

Job Responsibilities:

Analyze and interpret performance of measurements associated with nuclear medicine imaging equipment, perform oversight of radionuclide calibration equipment and analyze and interpret measurements and calculations associated with patient organ doses according to accepted radiation safety principles. Ensures compliance with all applicable requirements of the NRC and the New York City and New York State Health Codes. Services are to be provided at various locations as assigned.

Perform Radiation Safety/Quality Assurance testing of the following equipment:

    1. SPECT cameras
      1. SPECT/CT units
      2. PET cameras
      3. PET/CT units
      4. Uptake probes
      5. Dose Calibrators
      6. Well Counters

Other tasks may include:

    1. Radiation protection design and surveys
      1. Participation in ACR accreditation
      2. Patient Dosimetry Calculations
      3. Nuclear medicine audits
      4. Occupational radiation exposure monitoring
      5. Survey meter calibration
      6. Sealed source leak tests and inventory verification
      7. Evaluation of human and animal research studies involving the use of ionizing radiation

General:

    1. Maintains knowledge and professional credentials in order to satisfy all associated regulatory requirements. Participates in the development of improved techniques for measurement and data management including new computerized systems and will keep the Director informed about all areas of responsibility. Performs all Radiation Safety/Quality Assurance testing and report preparation in a timely manner, i.e. within 2 weeks of due date. Attendance to all departmental meetings is required. Demonstrates a working knowledge of the requirements, standards and recommendations published by external agencies such as
      1. New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene NYC Health Code Article 175 (Radiation Control)
      2. New York State Department of Health Title 10 Part 16 NYCRR (Sanitary Code)
      3. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Title 6 Part 380 NYCRR (Environmental Code)
      4. US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations
      5. US Department of Transportation Title 49 of the Code if Federal Regulations
      6. National Council on Radiation Protection & Measurements
      7. The Joint Commission

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree program that is acceptable to the NYS Office of Professions
  • 7 years of relevant experience
  • NYS License in Nuclear Medical Physics;

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $121,792.21 - $210,091.64 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
