The Harley-Davidson Motor Company Product Development Center (PDC) located in Wauwatosa, WI is home to the mantra - You dream it. We build it. Join our team as a Supplier Tooling Specialist.

Job Summary

The Supplier Tooling Specialist demonstrates specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise in providing technical leadership and teams with other Harley-Davidson stakeholders who interface with supplier tooling development and operations record keeping and decisions.


Serves as a leader and a resource regarding supplier tooling and generally works as a liaison to several stakeholder groups including, but not limited to:



  • Development Purchasing Analysts (DPAs) in evaluating tooling design for a product/part within manufacturability and quality expectations
  • Supply Base Analysts/Supply Chain Analysts (SBAs/SCAs) in performing Supplier Tooling Evaluations/Audits
  • Parts & Accessories (P&A) to transition non-current tooling and with suppliers to optimize tooling resources and disposition obsolete tooling


Shared responsibility for overall management and coordination of work related to supplier tooling throughout the life of the tool (4 stages: development, operational, non-current, and obsolete).

Job Responsibilities

  • Ability to drive results with a moderate level of guidance and direction in reviewing and approving all tooling related purchases (both capital and expense).
  • Resource to Plants to scrutinize tooling budget, sorted by location/plant, for all tooling replacement/refurbishment.
  • Manage tooling budget vs. spend data in the tooling records system to create history and use this information to improve budgeting and tooling related decision-making.
  • Impacts quality of their own work and the work of others on their team when working with suppliers to create a lower spend and more efficient tooling program that will support increased capacity capability.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge and experience and become an expert in operation, maintenance and use of the tooling records system, train users of the system as needed and use the system to assist with tooling purchase decisions.
  • Influences design of tooling in terms of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), optimal tooling set-up and incorporating quality improvement measures by analyzing possible solutions using technical experience, judgment with a moderate level of guidance and direction.
  • Perform Supplier Tooling Evaluations/Audits to confirm and update tooling records, influence CI activities related to tooling and create supplier accountability.

Education Requirements
High School Diploma or Equivalent Required
Experience Requirements

This position typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience. In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated the following:



  • Demonstrated experience to expert knowledge of tooling in the majority of the following areas:

    • Die Casting (high pressure, low pressure, permanent/semi-permanent mold, shell, investment)
    • Metal Fabrication (stamping, metal forming, tube bending, welding)
    • Forging
    • Machining
    • Robotics
    • Sintered Metal
    • Plating Racks
    • Plastics/Composites
    • Rubber Isolation
    • Electrical.


  • Up-to-date knowledge of current tooling pricing market and ability to negotiate to this information.
  • Design/model making experience.
  • Knowledge of JIT and Lean Manufacturing principles, capacity planning and cost benefit analysis.

The pay range shown represents the national average pay range for this role. Your pay may be more or less than the stated range and is dependent on your geographic location and level of experience.
