- $24.38 - $35.35 Hourly
- $50,713.52 - $73,534.66 Annually
- Non-Negotiable Starting Pay: $24.3815 Hourly / $50,713.52 Annually
SCHEDULE:
- Monday - Friday, 7: 00 a.m.-3: 00 p.m.
- Beginning in November each year, working hours will vary. May be assigned to 3rd shift during winter months.

HOW YOU'LL CONTRIBUTE:
As a Public Works Technician, you will play an important role maintaining the City's streets, sidewalks, alleys, parking lot, rights-of-way, and public infrastructure. Through the operation of vehicles, equipment, and hand tools, you will perform a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction activities that support safe and reliable public services. You will contribute to street repair projects, traffic control, and work zone safety; seasonal operations such as snow and ice removal and leaf collection; and emergency response efforts when needed. In addition, you will help ensure the safe and efficient operation of public works equipment through routine inspections, maintenance, and servicing. Success in this role requires a commitment to teamwork, safety, quality workmanship, and dependable service to the community while working in a variety of weather conditions and responding to operational needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Perform maintenance and repair of streets, alleys, sidewalks, and parking lots using asphalt, concrete, and other construction materials.
- Set forms, pour and finish concrete, and complete routine and permanent pavement repairs.
- Operate public works vehicles, including pickup trucks, dump trucks, and other equipment, to transport materials and support maintenance operations.
- Operate and utilize construction and maintenance equipment to repair and maintain streets, parking lots, and public rights-of-way.
- Perform snow and ice control activities, including plowing, spreading de-icing materials, and responding to winter weather events.
- Assist with seasonal operations, including leaf collection, vegetation management, debris removal, and refuse collection.
- Insteall, maintain, and remove traffic control devices, signs, barricades, and detour routes to support safe work zones.
- Utilize hand and power tools to perform maintenance, construction, landscaping, and material handling activities.
- Load, unload, transport, and distribute equipment, supplies, and materials as assigned.
- Conduct routine inspections and perform minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including lubrication, fluid checks, component replacement, and equipment calibration.
- Clean, maintain, and properly store tools, vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
- Follow established safety procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment.
- Respond to emergency situations, after-hours callouts, and standby assignments as required.
- Maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other departments, contractors, and members of the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Principles, practices, and methods used in public works maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
- Operation, maintenance, capabilities, and limitations of trucks, construction equipment, power tools, and hand tools.
- Work zone traffic control procedures, occupational safety standards, and safe work practices.
- Materials, techniques, and equipment used in asphalt, concrete, roadway, and right-of-way maintenance.
- Safe and efficient operation of a variety of public works vehicles and equipment.
- Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and the public.
- Inspection, servicing, and routine maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Understanding and application of oral and written instructions, policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Capacity to work independently with limited supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees, public officials, contractors, and community members.
- Ability to identify operational, maintenance, and safety issues and take appropriate corrective action.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments and weather conditions.
- Ability to respond to emergencies, work standby assignments, and report for duty outside normal work hours when required.
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, dependability, and quality workmanship in all assigned duties.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent; one (1) year experience in operation and routine maintenance of public works trucks and construction motor equipment in road maintenance or related work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake Endorsement, or the ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of hire.
- Must maintain all required licenses and endorsements as a condition of employment.
- Additional certifications related to public works operations, equipment operation, traffic control, safety, or roadway maintenance may be required or obtained as assigned by the City.

Residency Requirement
AFSCME employees shall live within a 20-mile radius from the City's Emergency Center, located at 1630 8th Avenue in Moline, within 180 days of hire.
