Position Location
This position is located onsite at the NASA Stennis Space Center, Mississippi.
Job Overview
The ideal candidate will assist in the design and analysis of new site or test facility systems or modifications to existing site or test facility systems.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Duties:
- Development of mechanical designs for construction of new or modification to existing facilities.
- Monitor and report weekly on the status of all current design projects; design schedule and actual cost.
- Prepare plans and specifications in conjunction with other project team members for construction packages.
- Develops fluid and thermal analysis models, component calibration models, and test data review packages in support of rocket propulsion testing.
- Participation in the entire design cycle of fluid subsystems including conceptual design, thermo-fluid modeling, structural layout and analysis, integration, and test and mission support.
- Designing and routing individual fluid subsystems (i.e. propellant feed, pressurization, pneumatics, discharge, and capture) including discrepancy resolution.
- Designing fluid component groups (i.e. solenoid valves, regulators, pressure vessels) including specification, procurement, processing, and discrepancy resolution of specific components.
- Prepares plans and drawings using design software. Performs various analyses, including dimensional, thermal, and structural, qualification, integration, etc. to assist in the identification of correct configuration, integrity, and feasibility of design(s).
- Structural design and analysis of fluid subsystems including developing 3D models, assembly, and detail drawings.
- Fluid component and subsystem and system level testing including test planning, test execution, data reduction, and data analysis.
- Project planning, scheduling, and cost estimation.
- Develop heat load analysis models, flow models, etc. as required for the design of facility systems. Systems include but are not limited to: Cryogenic and gas systems.
- Assist in the review of vendor/contractor submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs) and change orders to bring product design from engineering phase to be completed construction.
- Perform trade studies and conceptual design studies to support site-wide improvements.
- Assist other departments as needed with engineering support.
Job Requirements
Mandatory:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited university.
MS degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering degree a plus. - 5-10+ years of experience with aircraft, spacecraft, or vehicles in the detail design of aerospace or equivalent type fluid systems and components.
- Working knowledge of fluid components such as valves, regulators, and fittings.
- Knowledge of fabrication, integration processes and quality control relative to tubes/piping and machined components.
- Working knowledge of materials and treatments.
- Experience working with mechanical design principles and practices. Knowledge of and application of current industry standards, such as, but not limited to: ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, ASME B31.3 Process Piping, ASHRAE 90.1, International Building Code, etc.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen in order to obtain required NASA badge.
- Must be able to provide a certified Birth Certificate (with state seal), Passport, or INS Citizenship documents on date of hire.
- Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner.
- Must have, and maintain, a valid driver's license.
- Prior knowledge of NASA site, experienced with working on government installations preferred.
- Knowledge of software/codes (Visual BASIC, FORTRAN, C, etc.) a plus.
- Experience in design of piping systems; knowledge of process piping standards (ASME B31.3) and pressure vessel codes (ASME BPVC Section VIII) is a plus.
- Coursework or experience associated with aerospace propulsion systems.
- Good organizational and planning skills.
- Good Communication skills.
- Ability to work independently but follow specific detailed instructions.
- Ability to interface with various levels of personnel in a multi-cultural, team- oriented environment.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required. * Experience with cryogenic systems.
- Experience with Creo Parametric, PTC Windchill, FLUENT, ANSYS, Flowmaster, MathCad, Autopipe, CAD and/or Winplot.
- Experience with the application and use of welding.
