???????Summary
The Detailing Coordinator is responsible for managing the technical documentation and communication between the design team and the fabrication shop. This role ensures that all shop drawings and 3D models are accurate, compliant with AISC/AWS standards, and delivered on schedule to support fabrication timelines. The Detailing Coordinator serves as the primary technical point of contact for RFIs (Requests for Information), manages the submittal process, and ensures that the digital information within production management systems (Tekla PowerFab) is accurate and up to date.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded from time to time as management deems necessary.
  1. Manage relationships with third-party detailing firms, ensuring adherence to George Steel standards, project specifications, and delivery schedules.
  2. Assist Project Managers in identifying and quantifying scope changes discovered during the detailing process.
  3. Provide technical clarification to the Plant Manager and shop supervisors on complex geometries or fabrication requirements shown on drawings.
  4. Perform quality checks on shop and erection drawings for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with contract documents before they are released to the shop.
  5. Identify, draft, and track RFIs to resolve design discrepancies with the architects and engineers of record, preventing fabrication delays.
  6. Oversee the import/export of model data (BIM) into Tekla PowerFab to ensure seamless transitions from detailing to shop drawings, and required material procurement to CNC processing.
  7. Attend BIM coordination meetings, representing George Steel's detailing interests to facilitate finalization of fabrication drawings and identify clashes between structural steel, MEP, and related trades.
  8. Coordinate the transfer of BIM models to owners, general contractors, and other trades during the drawing development stage to support project-wide BIM coordination requirements.
  9. Manage and coordinate the submittal and approval process, ensuring all drawings are reviewed by the appropriate parties and returned within the project timeline, and that all documentation is submitted, tracked, and approved according to the project schedule.
  10. Maintain organized, up-to-date design and shop drawing logs within Tekla PowerFab to ensure the shop always works from the latest revision.
  11. Assist in maintaining and updating company-specific detailing standards and "standard connection" libraries.

  3. BIM/Software Knowledge: Proficiency in Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, or similar 3D modeling and detailing software.
  4. Project Coordination: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  5. Problem Solving: Ability to resolve design conflicts and field-fit issues through technical analysis and communication.
  6. Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills to bridge the gap between design professionals, project managers, and shop personnel.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must satisfactorily perform each essential duty. In this position, the individual will have a strong background in structural steel detailing or drafting and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where accuracy is paramount.
Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED is required. An associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Drafting/Design, or Construction Management is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in structural steel detailing, drafting, or detailing coordination is required.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints is required.
  • Experience with Tekla PowerFab, STRUMIS, or Bluebeam.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work overtime as needed.
Work Environment
This position primarily functions in a professional office setting but requires regular interaction with the fabrication shop. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet estimating deadlines. While the office is climate-controlled, employees will occasionally be exposed to the shop-floor environment, which includes loud machinery, overhead cranes, and varying temperatures. PPE Requirement: When entering production areas, employees must adhere to all safety protocols, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hearing protection and safety glasses. Work Schedule
The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., which includes a daily lunch break. Please note that additional hours or work outside of this schedule may be required based on business needs or to meet specific deadlines.
Physical Demands
This position involves prolonged periods of sitting and computer work, along with occasional walking, standing, bending, and reaching. Employees must be able to communicate clearly in both verbal and written forms. The role may occasionally require lifting, pushing, pulling, or moving objects weighing up to 25-50 pounds.
