Summary of Position

This is a daytime support position to the Shelter Supervisor/Case Manager and guests of the Seasonal Day Shelter Program. This position assists with shelter client intakes, meals, and record keeping, and shelter operation details.

Wage: $11.41 to $15.53 per hour

Up to 21 hours per week, 3 weekends per month - Sat/Sun 10AM-3PM

Qualifications



  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in working with homeless low-income persons with disabilities preferred.
  • Understanding of the delivery of Social Services and eligible benefits.
  • Ability to work well with clients of diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups; respects confidentiality; able to work within ethical and legal parameters of social services.
  • Willing to work in an environment with a flexible schedule and in a team environment.
  • Computer literate including proficiency in the use of Windows and Microsoft Word, Excel, and database programs.
  • Possess an aptitude in both written and oral communication.
  • Must be trustworthy, especially in confidential matters, be organized and efficient and be able to problem solve.
  • Possess a working knowledge of local community assistance resources preferred.
  • Willingness to support the philosophy, goals, objectives, and mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Must pass The Salvation Army background check.
  • It must be understood by the incumbent that the provisions of Safe From Harm will apply upon commencement of employment and also understood that the required Safe From Harm training be satisfactorily completed with the first thirty (30) of employment.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This job description is not all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential duties of the position. Other duties, responsibilities and tasks may be assigned by the Business Administrator/Corps Officer.



  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with co-workers. This would include, but is not limited to such actions: work as a team with co-workers for better store efficiency, resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and clients; respect of others' property and person and professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, and subordinates.
  • Support the mission of The Salvation Army by treating every client and colleague with individual respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.
  • Engage community members (including but not limited to, customers, visitors, and clients) in a way that brings them to the Corps for programming, events, activities, and Pathway of Hope.


Support Staff:



  • Ensure the safety of shelter guests and ensure a secure environment during shelter hours.
  • Provide access to, and regularly interact with, guests. Report any area of concern to the Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a supply of printed community resources to hand out, and other information.
  • Assist guests and Supervisor with intakes.
  • Assist with daily meals.
  • Assist with cleaning and stocking bathrooms, garbage and snow removal.
  • Develop and maintain a sufficient level of First Aid knowledge, study the manual on Blood-Borne Pathogens and know when to call 911.
  • Identify the issues of, and how to diffuse a potential crisis.
  • Enforce residential policies and procedures consistently and fairly to all shelter guests.
  • Keep informed on activities and communicate those to guests as directed.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude.
  • Support other staff as needed to accomplish overall operations of the facility.
  • Participate in, and satisfactorily complete, training programs required of the assigned position to enhance the ability to perform this job.
  • And all other duties as assigned.



Working Conditions

There are normally no hazards or significant unpleasant physical working conditions, with the exception of the occasional emotional distress or turmoil (due to varying situations) with residents. The essential duties and responsibilities of this position cannot be performed from home.

Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Risk Level

Risk Level 1 - The tasks or activities conducted by Risk Level 1 would involve no known expectation of exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.

  • Sedentary Work; some walking about the building; mostly sitting.
  • Exerts up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.


Travel



  • The incumbent may be required to travel by personal vehicle, organization vehicle or other modes of travel to support the Mission of The Salvation Army.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
  • Able to interpret various instructions.


Language Ability



  • Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals
  • Ability to prepare memos, and reports using proper punctuation, spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis; correct punctuation and variation in word order; using present, perfect and future tenses.
