Telecom Engineer Overland Park, KS $50.00 per hour 26-05482 Job Summary The Telecom Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, analysis, implementation, testing, and optimization of wireless communications systems and infrastructure. This role combines engineering design, field validation, system testing, and deployment support activities across a variety of wireless technologies, including LTE, 5G, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and narrowband communication systems. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in RF engineering principles, wireless network design, and telecommunications infrastructure, along with the ability to support both office-based engineering activities and field implementation efforts. This position offers opportunities to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, equipment manufacturers, and project stakeholders while supporting critical communications projects from concept through deployment. Job Responsibilities
- Perform link budget calculations, reliability analysis, and path feasibility studies for wireless communication systems.
- Design, model, analyze, and optimize wireless communication networks using RF planning and engineering tools.
- Support wireless technologies including LTE, 5G, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and narrowband communication systems.
- Conduct coverage analysis, frequency planning, interference studies, and network optimization activities.
- Participate in the design of telecom equipment installations, including radios, modems, routers, switches, antennas, and backup power systems.
- Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BoMs) for wireless communication system deployments.
- Apply grounding and bonding standards to telecommunications infrastructure designs and installations.
- Review construction drawings, engineering packages, and technical documentation for accuracy and compliance.
- Support field installation, commissioning, integration, and startup activities.
- Conduct site surveys, path studies, inspections, and system validation testing.
- Configure, test, and troubleshoot wireless communication equipment and associated infrastructure.
- Prepare installation documentation, testing procedures, Methods of Procedure (MOPs), engineering reports, and technical deliverables.
- Assist with troubleshooting, performance analysis, and optimization of deployed communication systems.
- Evaluate engineering alternatives and support client requests related to communications system design and implementation.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and technical teams to support project scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
- Develop and maintain telecom engineering standards, installation guidelines, and best practices.
- Present technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Communications Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required.
- Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in wireless communications engineering required.
- Strong understanding of RF engineering principles, wireless system design, and communications infrastructure.
- Experience using RF design, modeling, and planning tools.
- Familiarity with GIS platforms such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Knowledge of wireless technologies including LTE, 5G, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and narrowband communication systems.
- Experience performing wireless system testing, commissioning, validation, and optimization activities.
- Ability to read, interpret, and review engineering drawings, technical specifications, and construction documentation.
- Experience preparing technical procedures, engineering reports, installation documentation, and project deliverables.
- Knowledge of telecom site infrastructure, including radios, antennas, routers, switches, backup power systems, and associated equipment.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to present technical information to clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
- Willingness and ability to travel occasionally to project sites for surveys, inspections, commissioning, and validation activities.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Communications Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
Work Experience
- Minimum of 2-5 years of wireless communications engineering experience required.
- Experience supporting wireless network design, implementation, testing, and optimization projects preferred.
- Experience with RF engineering tools, propagation modeling, and wireless system analysis preferred.
- Experience supporting field installation, commissioning, and system integration activities preferred.
- Utility, energy, critical infrastructure, or industrial communications experience preferred.
- Experience developing telecom standards, installation guidelines, engineering procedures, and technical documentation preferred.
- Knowledge of grounding, bonding, and telecommunications infrastructure best practices preferred.
- Experience working with multiple wireless equipment manufacturers and communications platforms preferred.
