Summary:

The Head of Apellis Supply Chain unit is responsible for the end-to-end supply chain management for all of Biogen's Apellis clinical and commercial products. The position reports directly to the Head of Apellis Technical Operations at Biogen and is an integral part of the Tech Ops Leadership team. This position is located in either Cambridge MA, or Research Triangle Park, NC.

The Head of Apellis Supply Chain will be managing a hybrid/remote global team; and is responsible for maintain and advancing key external product specific collaborations. Main functional areas reporting to this position include Supply Chain Strategy, Clinical Drug Supply, Commercial E2E Planning, Trade Compliance, and Distribution & Logistics.

Biogen is operating in a very dynamic, agile and customer-focused environment. The leader for the Apellis Supply Chain team will therefore need to work in a highly collaborative fashion within Biogen, Affiliates, Commercial, and R&D to ensure clinical pipeline supply readiness, prepare for critical LCM launches and sustain high customer service, globally. The vision for the Apellis supply chain operation is a function that creates a competitive advantage for growth and value in the marketplace through orchestrating reliable, resilient and cost-effective pathways to deliver health solutions that change patients' lives.

The incumbent will establish strategic and operational plans for the prior Apellis clinical and commercial supply chains aligned with the overall strategy, have clear and measurable goals and objectives with strong contingencies in all areas that are business critical.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Create the vision for Supply Chain organizational success; define direction, strategies and plans for implementation; communicate vision and plans with all stakeholders across the organization.

Ensure business goals and objectives are achieved. Effectively direct the organization and work with colleagues, and teams within Apellis and Biogen, Commercial and R&D to achieve goals and plans. Accountable for fiscal budget management.

Accountable to effectively oversee the end-to-end flow of materials, information, and products to ensure efficiency, cost reduction, and timely delivery. This includes but is not limited to the accountability for negotiation of contracts and strong relationship management with suppliers, distributors, and 3rd party logistics (3PL) providers; effective management of inventory levels, demand planning, production scheduling, and transportation to ensure efficient distribution; proactive identification of potential issues and bottlenecks, as well as the contingency plans for potential supply disruptions to maintain business continuity.

Evaluate opportunities to move the organization forward, bringing innovative ideas and approaches to the work. Actively champions and holds the organization accountable to uncover customer and market needs to drive continuous improvement.

Develop and maintain a highly capable team of professionals. Ensure continuity of key leadership positions through the development of talent. Anticipate talent needs, build capability where expertise is needed.

C. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

(inclusive of minimum educational level necessary to perform the job (High School diploma, Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Masters, PhD, etc.), certifications and minimum experience requirements

  • At least 20 years of pharmaceutical industry experience.
  • At least 15 years of commercial supply chain experience and leadership.
  • Bachelor's degree required - an advanced degree in a relevant area (e.g. Managerial Economics) is highly desired.

D. Knowledge & Skills

  • Prior experience in managing a global, complex supply chain organization in a pharmaceutical and/or biotech company. Strong knowledge of Pharma Operations, Quality, Regulatory, Business Operations and Market Dynamics
  • Prior experience in building and scaling a global supply chain operation to support increasing market demand based on organic growth, new market entries as well as new product launches.
  • Managed clinical drug supply chain as a part of an overall supply chain management role.
  • Thorough understanding of business process and systems in pharmaceutical industry. Experience with demand/supply planning and forecasting software to improve inventory management and supply and mitigate risk is required.
  • Proven ability to successfully operate a supply chain partly based on outsourced capabilities, especially the management of contract manufacturing organization is critical. Proven experience in negotiation; Excellent communication skills.
  • Proven ability and a strong desire to work collaboratively with all internal and external stakeholders: Clinical, Marketing and Manufacturing is critically important to success in this role. Prior on-the-ground experience in one or more of these areas (managed a manufacturing plant as an example) is highly desirable.
  • Ability to build, convincingly communicate and execute strategic and operational plans for a global supply chain function, including demonstrated cultural understanding and agility.
  • Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to communicate vision, set direction, as well as inspire, motivate and mentor a cross functional team.
  • Proven Leadership & Problem-Solving capabilities, effective in leading teams under pressure and resolving operational bottlenecks.
  • Strong talent development skills.

Pay Information:

Base salary for this role will consider multiple factors, including but not limited to, candidate qualifications, relevant expertise, specialized skills, and industry experience in complement-targeted therapies. The targeted base salary range for this position is $264,000-$373,000. This range represents the base salary only and reflects Apellis' commitment to competitive compensation within the biopharmaceutical industry. The final salary offered may vary based on individual qualifications, business needs, and current market conditions.
