Responsibilities:

JOB SUMMARY
Under the guidance of surgeons, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, this position completes tasks assigned and duties that are pertinent to patient care with musculoskeletal conditions in the Orthopedic clinic, urgent care, and on occasions may be required to perform work in a hospital-based setting and travel to different orthopedic clinic, urgent care locations. In addition to this the below is also required.
The Medical Assistant provides general front and back office support to professional staff. Escorts patients to exam rooms. Maintains clean, neat and well-stocked exam rooms. Must have knowledge of medical front and back office procedures. Provides quality phone service by scheduling patients or referring caller to appropriate party. Answers phone messages from patients promptly. Maintains patient information that is accurate and charts/paperwork are filed correctly. Maintains medical records.
Under the direction of a Provider, the Medical Assistant performs a variety of duties in connection with the examination and treatment of patients. May be assigned to a specialist. The MA takes a pro-active approach utilizing available resources to best serve the patient population. Performs a variety of clerical support duties including receptionist, telephone, scheduling, message management and data input. Utilizes knowledge and skill to provide appropriate care in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures and protocols and Arizona validated competencies. The MA works in a team model to improve the patient's experience, create better communication and access to care, and support processes that will improve patient satisfaction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supports providers with routine clinic/occasional hospital care functions, including providing a basic level of patient care and treatment. Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patient, Escorts the patient to the examining room, obtains a brief history, documents chief complaint takes vital signs to include weight and temperature. Preps the patient for exam, assists the physician/clinician on exams and any special procedures. Performs phlebotomy and runs centrifuge machine to standard of practice for PRP.
  • Applies, adjusts, and removes casts, splints, and other orthopedic DME, changes dressings, and removes sutures/staples as directed by the presiding practitioner. The employee documents actions taken, supplies used, techniques utilized, related measurements, etc. in the patient's electronic medical record.
  • Manages patient and pharmacy phone calls by coordinating with other health care professionals to complete patient requests including medication refills as directed by department or provider protocol, pending medications for provider review and or calling pharmacy back with approved medication/refill and documents a phone note when applicable. May travel to off site locations to perform diagnostic testing and assist in physical exam components, TB testing, Injections, phlebotomy and other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the Orthopedic Medical group.
  • Will prepare and document injections for providers as standard in orthopedics. Will prepare, record and administers medications as trained and directed by provider. This can include TB testing under the supervision and order of the physician. Will Perform venipuncture and obtains specimens, performs CLIA waived lab tests. Performs office procedures including, but not limited to, PFT, UDS, EBT, EKG, fit testing, within the scope of practice as directed by provider.
  • Demonstrates infection prevention and control standards related to hand washing, standard precautions, aseptic and sterile technique.
  • Replenish supplies on an as needed basis in all exam rooms, cast room, supply closet, DME Par.
  • Keeps work environment, exam rooms and patient care areas clean and sanitized as needed.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as requested. Performs a variety of front office duties as needed, including, but not limited to, reception, telephone, chart maintenance, insurance forms and scheduling. Organize and communicate with insurance companies for authorizations for therapies, testing and specialist referrals. Provides appropriate referrals to case management for employees. Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • Other / Certificate of a medical assistant program or completion of an U.S. Armed Forces medical services training program. Candidates who completed a program prior to February 2, 2000 can satisfy the minimum education requirements by providing evidence of direct supervision by the same physician, physician group, or physician assistant for a minimum of 2000 hours to satisfy the minimum education requirements. Required
  • Other / Certificate of completion or graduate from an orthopedic technologist or orthopedic casting program. Preferred
EXPERIENCE
  • 1 year One year of experience in healthcare environment Required
  • 1 year One year of prior orthopedic experience Preferred
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification from the American Heart Association Required
