IMC / PCU Overview The Intermediate Care Unit (IMC), also known as the Progressive Care Unit (PCU), at The George Washington University Hospital bridges the gap between ICU and general medical-surgical care. The IMC/PCU provides specialized monitoring and treatment for patients who require higher acuity care, including continuous cardiac monitoring, complex medication management, and frequent assessments. Patients in the IMC/PCU may include those stepping down from the ICU, patients with cardiac, respiratory, neurological, or medical conditions requiring close observation, and those at risk for clinical deterioration. Nurses in this unit develop strong assessment skills, critical thinking, and early-intervention expertise while working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Job Summary Are you a skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse seeking an opportunity in an Intermediate or Progressive Care environment? The George Washington University Hospital is seeking IMC/PCU RNs to provide high-quality, patient-centered care to moderately complex patients requiring enhanced monitoring and clinical expertise. This role is ideal for nurses who enjoy critical thinking, early intervention, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. ResponsibilitiesPatient Care: Provide evidence-based nursing care to IMC/PCU patients with complex medical and surgical conditions. Monitoring: Perform continuous cardiac and physiologic monitoring, recognize early signs of deterioration, and intervene appropriately. Medication Management: Administer and titrate select IV medications and therapies in accordance with unit protocols. Collaboration: Partner with physicians, advanced practice providers, ICU teams, and ancillary services to ensure seamless patient care and safe transitions. Clinical Judgment: Apply strong assessment and decision-making skills to manage changes in patient condition and escalate care when needed. Advocacy: Support patients and families through education, communication, and compassionate care. Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, interventions, and patient responses. Education: Provide patient and family education related to diagnoses, treatment plans, and recovery goals. Quality & Safety: Participate in quality improvement initiatives and uphold patient safety standards within the IMC/PCU. Qualifications
