THE POSITION

As an Engineering Technician with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), you will play a key role in supporting vital construction projects that impact travelers every day. You will take part in hands-on work that helps keep roads, bridges, and structures safe and accessible for communities across the state. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the detailed inspection and documentation of transportation construction projects to ensure that work meets approved plans and standards. You will participate in field checks, material reviews, and project reporting throughout the training period. As an Engineering Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Construction Inspection: Assist with reviewing road and bridge construction activities to confirm compliance with specifications
  • Material Evaluation: Observe and check materials such as concrete, bituminous products, and drainage components
  • Compaction Testing: Support visual testing of soils, aggregates, and subsurface layers to confirm proper compaction
  • Project Documentation: Record diary entries, calculations, quantities, and sketches using manual or electronic systems
  • Technical Reporting: Help produce reports, track progress, and monitor material quantities using software tools
  • Field Coordination: Communicate with staff, agencies, and contractors and assist in resolving issues encountered in the field

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $40,685.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • An associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or any other appropriate field of engineering technology.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Other Requirements:

  • This particular position also requires possession of a valid driver's license.
