Lakeside Laboratory is seeking several interns for Summer 2026.

Rate of pay: $10-$12

Position Location: Milford, IA

Position Outline:These positions collect, analyze and report data regarding environmental quality in the NW Region of Iowa and Okoboji. Interns also conduct ecological restoration techniques to project and improve local environments. Projects include: Assessment of water quality in the Iowa Great Lakes, Assessment of Aquatic Invasive Species, SCUBA assessment of lakebed disturbance, Assessment of recreation pressure in the Iowa Great Lakes, Managing 147 acres of native prairie/lakeshore/wetlands and other habitats on Lakeside Lab grounds, Assisting with Education Camps for K-12 children and Public Information and Outreach efforts within the community.

Duties:

* Collecting water quality samples from tributaries and lake systems. Recording data and assuring quality assurance/quality control of samples collected.

* Analyzing data to determine status and trends in occurrence over time. Reporting results to the community using graphics, text, video or other means.

* Monitoring Aquatic Invasive Species encroachment in the Iowa Great Lakes.

* Monitoring the number of boats and recreation activities in designated areas of the Iowa Great Lakes.

* Improving habitat using prescribed burns, pesticide application, or brush/plant removal.

* Complete performance metrics

* Submit Quarterly Reports of activities

* Maintain a detailed timekeeping record of hours and activities

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

* Problem-solving skills and ability to apply current knowledge to new situations.

* Knowledge of terrestrial or aquatic ecosystems is desirable, but not required. A desire to learn about these ecosystems is preferred.

* Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Use of Google tools and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) is desirable.

Interns can expect to gain the following skills/experiences in this position:

* Use of sensors and technology affiliated with environmental monitoring and assessment (such as drones, telemetry, dissolved oxygen sensors, water flow sensors, buoys, etc.)

* Project management including development of goals, objectives, timelines and outcomes for research or outreach projects.

* Some interns may be trained in SCUBA and aquatic invasive species identification.

* Terrestrial and aquatic habitat restoration techniques.

* Training in prescribed burn protocols, pesticide applicator certified (Iowa) and learn the basics of using land management equipment.

* Interns will learn and apply the fundamentals of quality assurance/quality control in environmental monitoring and assessment.
