Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Patient Benefits Representative educates patients on insurance coverage and benefits, assesses financial responsibility, and assists with financial assistance resources when needed. This position ensures accurate insurance eligibility, benefit verification, and documentation, while adhering to all compliance, ethics, and privacy standards.
Responsibilities
Essential Responsibilities
- Prior to treatment, obtain and verify patient demographics and insurance coverage
- Educate patients on insurance benefits, co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses
- Assess patients' ability to meet financial obligations and discuss payment arrangements
- Identify financial assistance programs and assist patients with applications as appropriate
- Complete Patient Cost Estimate forms based on diagnosis, insurance coverage, and assistance resources
- Obtain patient signatures on required reimbursement and liability forms and forward to the billing office
- Coordinate with Clinical Reviewers to ensure insurance pre-authorizations and referral approvals are obtained prior to treatment
- Review patient account balances and notify the front desk of patients needing financial consultation
- Ensure correct co-pay amounts are entered into the system for accurate collection
- Verify and update patient demographics and insurance information at each visit in accordance with SOPs
- Stay current on available financial aid programs and develop relationships with assistance providers
- Maintain strict confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, state, and federal regulations
- Maintain manuals, logs, forms, and required documentation
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum of three (3) years' experience as a patient pre-services coordinator or in a similar role
- Proficiency with computer systems and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
- Working knowledge of CPT and HCPCS coding
- Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to use appropriate medical and insurance terminology
- Ability to successfully complete required e-learning courses within 90 days of hire

Physical Demands

Work Environment
This position is based in an oncology/hematology clinical setting and may involve exposure to communicable diseases, medical preparations, and other conditions common to a healthcare environment.
